Thunderbird Club

I got a TRex Quint Machine after deciding to send the Octamizer back. It tracks better for me, but still doesn’t sound right. Instead of the usual transient of an attack, I get a very brief fundamental, then it switches to the octave down (the only effect I am going for at the moment - the reason I got the pedal. But even then it sounds like a weird synth, not a Thunderbird. I thought maybe it was the Rumble not wanting to go as low as I hoped, but playing up the neck or on higher pitched strings doesn’t help.

So, Quint users, any ideas?

@bylar13 , @ThaCoast , anyone …
A Lull fiver.

I use an MXR M280 Vintage Bass Octave. It seems to be the best one I have tried so far, but even it still doesn’t always do what I expect it to. Like all of them, sometimes it goes into the effect then seems like it drops briefly and restores it. And, the less input, the less “steady” the effect. I don’t use it much, and admittedly I probably need to experiment more with it. Maybe my settings are goofy. But it is a far cry better than anything others I’ve tried over the years.

@Miles_ONeal, i tried mine out with my Epi bird (60's Gib RI pickups), & messed around with all the knobs in different spots, & even just doing -1 oct & mix knobs around 1 o clock, i don't have any brief fundamental before octave kick in. & this goes for even when the +1 octave & fifth knobs are also "on".

Defective unit? What are your settings exactly, maybe there's a root cause we can collectively solve :)

Tonight's SF set-list. We are second up of three bands. First band is called The Mina Project https://www.theminaproject.group/ - who play the songs of '60s-'70s Italian singer Mina Mazzini. (Chucky probably knows of her) No familiar with the last band. It will be the first gig with our new drummer Scott. I'm looking forward to hearing him w/us live. Out of our past drummers, he does not play too loud. Because of that our rehearsals have been nice because we can all hear each other and as a result we all need to play better individually. (can't hide behind loud drums) :) win-win :bassist:

#9 is "Bad for Business", a jazzy non-Bond number // #7 is "Big Bad Handsome Man" - another jazzy NB number // #2 is "From Russia with Love" - Bond // #4 is Man with the Golden Gun" - Bond // "History Repeating" is PropellerHead w/Shirley Bassey ("Goldfinger") ... so 5 Bond songs, 3 'spy' songs, and the remaining 5 a mix of jazzy & danceable songs. Something for everyone!

v/o is vocals only. Speaking of an octave pedal, I use a POG on Buena to approach the sound of a 2-string bass with a slide. Close enough for Jazz...

Testify.
M' bird. Still the all-around best of whatever else I've ever got in the quiver: ergonomics, clarity, ease of play... suits every context I play in. It's got a voice that stands up in a mix like a 400 year-old tree in healthy forest. I've been trying to displace it (it's what I do- I test everything, eventually, to its limit- I'm in therapy), I can't do it.
Best machine ever.
Maybe a Gibson would make it take a second seat, but I don't know, and it's no issue. I don't covet one. This is good medicine for Headstock Coveting Syndrome.
It rises to the surface every time.

This takes nothing from the other two here, really liking the Sterling 34ca. But the Classic Pro outshines, is my #1.

Do you play MI in 5/4? It just doesn’t sound right otherwise.

@Miles_ONeal sorry you are not hearing what you want from that pedal. I use mine more as a pre-amp in that everything is set at 9 o'clock and then the signal goes to a drive pedal (Vintage Micro-tubes) that is also set to have a light effect on the signal and then to my HPF/LPF filter.

My "effects" are always on and are more about shaping a tone with consistency, as I have to play through many "house amps" when I gig or go to a practice spot.

I also have a TC electronics Sub N Up and a Vintage Digitech Bass Whammy Pedal. Happy to demo either of those for your if you can give some guidance as to what you are trying to accomplish.

FWIW, I have never been happy with any octave pedal if the goal was to get an extended range like having a five string. They all sound unnatural and overly affected to my ear.

I also have found that with all of the ones I have tried, they are all different. They all required some modification of my playing to make them, somewhat usable.

After a while I just get impatient/bored and go back to I was doing before the I got the effect!

Right on - we've stuck with Robert Preston (yes, same name as "The Music Man" movie lead character) at Get Reel Productions minutes from my house and after 6yrs he knows what we're after and as a musician himself creates an environment to successfully realize our songs in. The skilled human interface is critical to creativity.
remember Blade Runner?.....music may be the way we distinguish humans from AI replicants..... interesting times....I know it's a little out there but....

Morphine was so amazing. Sandman was a genius who was taken from us way too soon.

Nope. I guess not. This is what the label should look like. I don't remember exactly where it is on a 361 cabinet.
