Thunderbird Club

This morning’s axes of choice…

The Thunderbucker VP was perfect for our pre-service jam while the ‘64 handled everything else from soft and contemplative to full on rocking. I realized this morning that playing hard near the bridge gets into Angry Piano territory even with EBCFs.

This evening I spent a couple of hours woodshedding with: the Dead (Bertha, Scarlet Begonias); Stones (Dead Flowers); Beck, Hart, Wilkenfeld, et al (Going Down); and Mountain (Theme for an Imaginary Western). I toyed with Alice Cooper’s “Killer” album but couldn’t even.

Mind you, I’m not saying I kept up with most of this. By half way through “Going Down” my fingers were starting to spaz out. But Felix takes it easy on “Imaginary Western”, which made a nice cool down song. So many killer bassists, so few overlapping notes from my fingers. That’s OK, I had fun and my audience (Sharon) was happy.

correction : output transformer.....
Output Transformer - also known as the “No Load Emission Generator”. A wonderfully useful device to have, and built into every valve amp. Guaranteed to positively indicate the lack of an adequate cabinet connection.

Can’t remember if you connected your tube amp to your cab? Don't bother looking, simply plug your bass in, crank the volume and play away for a few minutes. If you’re not connected the NLEG feature will kick in and generate a smoke signal to let you know. ;)

Transformers were the first electronic component that convinced me magic exists.

Orderly, predictable, logical, phyics-based, but still magic, per Clarke's Law.

No electrical connection between input and output... but there better be one on the output, or else it's just a fancy short.

Then I started looking into antenna theory, and 🤯.

In other news...

Having Bass Withdrawl Syndrome, but otherwise having a wonderful time.

Where are you? Doesn’t look like SoCal…

Oh my! Eilean Donan. I’m so jealous. Scotland is my favorite country.

One thing about doing a show with both bands you are in… if you’re not having the best day, you just had two bad shows at once….

Not that yesterday was terrible, but it certainly wasn’t great. Couple of technical issues, generally not feeling very relaxed, and the lead singer/drummer in RSR having a rough show and not being able to hear anything from where he was… Not to mention the sound guy basically doing almost nothing to help the situation.

That sucks twice. I played on Friday with a band that's going to need a bass player in August. I'm enjoying the music, but there's been a bit more drama than I'm willing to put up with lately. And I don't have the time to put in to play the way I know I can play. So, there you have it. It will be a load off when it's over. They will find out how much work it is to schlep the PA as well. And all the stands and cables and whatnot that I supply but that they will have to buy now. The last straw came during a rehearsal when the BL/guitarist got on my case for "looking bored." I had next to no sleep and had been on a plane that had been delayed by six hours coming back from a work trip. That really pissed me off. Now he wants to buy fancy wedge monitors for the PA that will do nothing more than the monitors we already have. I have been through that routine, but he likes brand names. The monitor thing is just reinforcement of why I want out. They don't know yet. I'll let them know after the show in August. They have one in September when I'm going to be out of town. It was scheduled after I let everyone know I would be away. So, they can find a bass player for that one and everything after it.

If I'm being a prima donna, it doesn't matter to me. This is for fun - very few people make much money doing this and even fewer make a living doing it. When it's a PITA, then it's time to walk away. The other band is a whole lot of fun, and I expect it will stay that way until we all die off.

Luckily I like both bands (sometimes I’m less than excited about Bad Lemon), and given I am playing with 6 other musicians, I like all of them. Minor idiosyncrasies aside, they are all good guys with their s*it together and good musicians. We’re all doing it for the fun of writing, playing and performing music, so even when a show is less than it could be, I ultimately have fun being out and playing with these guys and playing with my “toys”…

I get it. We weren't making a lot, but it was still 'fun'-usually. Schlepping all our own "stuff"(no backlines here)had gotten to be a PIMA. I miss playing out (I don't play at home),but I guess doing it for nearly 54 years is enuff.
