After perusing the recommendations here, I think I did good. They're going on today.

I've done it a few times on my custom cut pg's - I get a scrap piece of clear from my local plastics store here in SF (cheap) and have used various backings - pretty much anything flat really. I don't attach it to the pg - just layer it underneath. Another clear-pg option is spraying the underside (any colour)- it gives it depth compared to opaque material.
I like that idea as I may want to put some sort of gold/brassy looking thing on the vintage pro whenever that is out.
I finally found my thick necked Firebird (or it found me), and I'm not letting' it go. They're way to hard to find!I did read your story when you posted it originally, and all other posts here in the club - How can I not notice, they are kinda loud with all the YEEEEELLIIIING and stuff...
It's great the Thunderbird bass found you and you are excited about it - it makes for entertaining posts. But my advice still stands; Relax and don't rush it, you will find your bass in time...
When it's time for getting THE bass, go visit a shop with a good selection - Even if you have to go far for it.
Don't forget that, when you ask opinions about specific basses you will get subjective answers - What may be perceived as a fat neck by one person, may not by another - Better judge this by trying them out yourselves...
An idea: If you can't find a 4-string with the right neck - Maybe converting a 5-string could be an option?

. My monetary situation demands that I take my time. I don't have a choice. But, I want to be ready when the time comes. No need to take any longer than necessary when the time actually comes. Anytime somebody suggests a brand or model, I dig in & start researching it to see if it might work out for me. It's proving to be much harder than I expected, and I'm starting to think I may have to look somewhere other than Gibson to satisfy my need

I'm also aware that opinions are subjective. "Chunky" to you, probably doesn't mean "chunky" to me. Though it's been a while... When somebody suggests something, or if I spot something myself... it just gives me something to research... not necessarily something to buy.
I don't want a 5 string, but the time I spent with that Sqwar Jazz 5 told me enough to know that it's a option I may need to consider.

They will make a custom one for you if the Gibson/Epi don't fit your bass. I have a carbon fiber guard and truss rod cover that was on my 2001 Gibson for a few years. looked really cool on the ebony finish. Not great shots, especially the last one since it is washed out in the AZ sun.
Curious they have an option for left-handed but they say, “will only fit a genuine '63-'66 Gibson® Thunderbird bass.”DOOOD!!! That's it! I'm right there with ya on the tort-over-white thing... but a carbon fiber (or maybe black pearl if ya can't find one), with that neck... would put it over the top!

You remind me of one of my best friends from college. He gets excited about everything. The good news is that he has had the sense to stay with the same wonderful wife for thirtytwo years. But he has changed jobs at least twenty times, maybe more. You get the drift....
Anyway, no shame in looking at everything. As we've discussed, get thee to to Chicago for a couple of days. Play everything you can get your hands on.
I currently own and routinely play two Tbirds, three Fenders, and a very nice Ibenez. I played each one before buying. My Goth was a mess when I bought it, but I knew what I was getting and that it needed a ton of work (it's now almost like new). As our friend GBassNorth says, "a tool for every job." I just love my Gibson Bird best of all. She was my dream bass as a kid and it's been a love affair ever since we hooked up.

I'd buy it myself, but I have no need for it as I own a very similar one in the same color. And the neck is too wide for my preference. What is interesting is that it has an upgraded P pickup and a Roger Waters signature neck with a 1.75 nut. I believe that is pretty much a classic, thick Pbass neck.

The fantasy bass would be a fat necked Gibson Thunderbird. Those have apparently have never been built. The next logical step is a custom shop. I don't have the budget for that. So, I guess right now, I'm lookin' for another way to keep the Gibson vibe, on a versatile bass with a fat neck, at a price I can afford. That doesn't sound like too much to ask, but I'm starting to think it is. It's a good thing I have a few months to find the needle in the haystack.

The fat necked Epi that I have now is only my second bass since being "born again" into the Gibson faith... and I'm quite happy with it!
Gibson + four string + chunky neck + Thunderbird sound + reasonable price?
One to consider might be the mid noughties Les Paul Double Cut/ Money Basses (essentially the same bass). Very, very under rated basses.
Anyway, they have a good solid neck 41- 42 mm at the nut. two guitar pickup shaped TB+s (which some of us reckon sound better than the ones they put in TBirds- a bit clearer and more lively), not a heavy bass (like some other model Les Paul Basses can be) and very well balanced.
I gig mine a lot.. Works really well in the three piece power trio type setting.
They come up occasionally and can be very reasonably priced. There are a couple on eBay at present- one from Japan which is too expensive and another in the US bidding @ $750 with a couple of hours to go. The US one is a blue Money Bass but appears to be less flamey than some of them can be. As I said they come up - around a thousand dollars should comfortably buy a good one IMO.

Gold ain't really my thing, but you could get some interesting texturing effects with gold leaf under a perspex PG.
