Thunderbird Club

Oops!

I started playing electric bass in 1979 and upright in 1994. Always wanted to learn, but it took me awhile to get around to. Got offered a tour for better money than I’d ever been offered, but had to play upright too. Learned just well enough to get through the tunes. Fake it till you make it :)
I find myself transfixed when watching a band / ensemble that includes a DB.
I figured - rent one and take serious lessons on it and in music.
To Kill retirement ‘boredom’ - not that I fear that really.

I started near 3 years ago at 53. Only wish I’d been playing regularly since I was 15 (I had a mis-start about then) or so. :)

I always wanted to play rock and roll stuff on upright. I’m just not a jazzer!
Here’s a clip of my old band, Legendary ShackShakers. I briefly had a beard and weighed about 70 lbs more than I do now, but I like this clip. Duane Denison, from Jesus Lizard was our guitar player at the time

Just bookmarked to watch at home.

ATM I’d be looking at all options. String quartet, swingy stuff, Rock n Roll, rockabilly (same?). Just got an itch.

Tell me more about the tone mod? What does it do?

I do like the tone rolled off sound as well as the piano of doom sound wide open. Hey there’s a good username.

You're welcome :)

I'll bring the list forward, did I see a pic?
I'm drinking good Scotch just now, too lazy to look.

So my Epi Classic arrived today, and I love it to death. Since I have been a flats-on-pbass guy for a long time, I’m still adapting to the radically different sound. I like the tone I get with all of the knobs maxed, as it tends to suppress the midrange “honk” that seems inherent to the instrument. It came with a fresh pack of Daddario exl170s, which I installed right away. Rather than going straight for the eq, are there roundwound strings you can recommend that specifically tame the honk a bit? I prefer to dial in a tone at the source as much as possible rather than with knobs. And I do see myself ditching the Pbasses and getting another Tbird with flats in the near future.

So can I officially join the club now? :) I should change my username.

Photo please.

With two pickups, try backing off the volume on the bridge pickup a notch -- you'll hear an increase in level and a thickening in tone. The neck pickup is throatier sounding. Turn the bridge all the way down and see how you like it.

I can relate to that! I started on punk and art rock and even some prog in different bands when I was a kid...

Now, I seem to get a lot of work doing Americana, Blues, country and rockabilly. Still play in an art rock noisey band as well as a band that’s kinda in the vein of Spoon, Shins. It’s fun to do lots of different stuff :)

Doing sessions this week for a punk band who are coming out of retirement after many years :)

Pic, from Sweetwater of my VP, it's in transit, probably overtaking Kat's parcel as I type this........................

...and my Ebony VP is in transit as well!
At the $600 asking price I just couldn't resist a mahogany/walnut laminate neck through, mahogany winged, nod to vintage two piece bridge and chrome pups with rings in a classic black finish. It'll be interesting to hear how it differs from my Gibby bird and the FrankenGoth. When I ordered the Goth I went with the lightest one in stock at just under 8 pounds, with the Ebony VP I decided to go in the other direction (just over 9 pounds) to see what difference it makes. Should be here by mid next week (unless it ships through Atlanta;)).

You're new here and probably haven't seen pics of my cars, but for those that have... About 5-10 years ago, the emblem of my (which was my dad's at the time) '72 Satellite (car with flames) went flying off, didn't realize it until we got home. So instead of buying an nos emblem, my dad made a vinyl decal to fit in the recessed spot that says:

"Growing up leads to growing old,
Growing old leads to dyin',
And dyin' don't sound like fun"

I have not grown up since that day.
Very John Cougar Mellencamp

:angel:I'm trying so hard not to post any pics of my garage or perpetuate a car discussion :speechless:
You really should :smug:

I would, but right now it wouldn't be a very interesting picture. A good portion of mine is currently a make-shift wood working shop for the trim in the house. The rest is a few cars packed tightly, that are also covered up.

When I was married, all of my basses were white...hard to tell em apart, especially when I kept most of them at the studio :)

These are the things keeping me from a NBD. Just restrung one of my uprights. $340 for a set of strings I like...

Care and feeding of an upright ain't cheap! Those look like you have gut on the D and G. E and A could be gut or synthetic. Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Slap? Those have a gut D and G and synthetic E and A. It's what I have been using lately. They are even sounding across all strings, which you wouldn't necessarily expect from how they are made. Keeping the guts in tune can be a bit of a chore at times. I may go back to a fully synthetic set of Evah Pirazzis next time, but it will be a while. The ones on the bass have been there a couple years and show no sign of needing replacement.

I'm not even remotely professional, but I do some of the same things with my upright that you do. I was mostly a bass guitar player for many years, then got a wild hair up (and had two jobs so I had the money) to buy and upright. It was a little more thought out than that, but not much. Three weeks after I got it, it was at the first gig I played on it. I kinda sucked, but the audience didn't seem to notice. Being utterly shameless has its advantages.

I'm surprised you're Dad din't buy that headphone amp for you! The sooner you get a headphone amp... the sooner you can quit replacing the trim in the house! #MesaDemolishionCo
