I've been in more international airports than I can remember (literally hundreds) but the one experience I'll never forget was very similar to yours. Frankfurt - I had passed thru security without a hitch and was making my way towards the proper boarding gate. As I was getting ready to step on to the moving sidewalk a German Paramilitary officer who apparently spoke no English jumped in front of me, pointed his machine gun at my head and yelled something I didn't understand. Needless to say, I pretty much froze in my tracks. With his machine gun he motioned me to get on the ground. So I got on my knees and put my hands behind my head while another paramilitary officer came up with a big snarling German Shepard on a very short leash and held the dog just inches from my face. Airport security then frisked me and took my carry on bag and briefcase and opened it right there on the floor and went through everything, all while I've got a gun pointed at my head and a dog just dying to chew my face off. When they were done with the search the airport security guy instructed them to leave, he handed my baggage back to me and just walked away without saying anything to me. Needless to say I was pretty shaken up by the experience. It wasn't until we landed back in the USA that I found out there was a bomb threat on the plane.
When my wife and I got married, we did it in London, where she's from. On the way home to Seattle, we got taken apart three times before getting on the plane at Gatwick. Somebody was looking for somebody else, and apparently white man with black woman fit the description well enough that we kept getting pulled aside, having our luggage demolished, and all but strip searched right there. I guess it was IRA bombing season or something. Neither of us looks even remotely Irish, so I don't know what it was all about.

There need to be stickers or something they could use-"Searched"or "here's your sign";)

These days when you fly back to the US from continental Europe through Heathrow you have to go through security twice. One at the country of departure and a second time in London. Wonder why? Sucks..
Last 2 times I entered the country I was on an aircraft carrier
