Thunderbird Club

Cabinet madness is in progress now. Looks like the surf band thing will be happening, so that means janky rig from hell time, for practice and some gigs. I found an old Kustom PA column that appears to have originally had one 10" driver and three 8" drivers. It's missing a driver, and the guy I got it from says it doesn't work. He didn't take it apart, so he didn't know why. For $10 it was impossible for me not to think about. And then it was on the way home so I didn't have to go very far out of my way to pick it up. It's probably going to suck, no matter what I do, but adventures in stupid ideas are good fun. It isn't tuck 'n' roll, so it has no bling factor at all. Worst case, It won't sound great, and I'll blow it up and start over. Best case, it will be the basis for the tall skinny janky rig of doom. Testing to see if it's just an empty box with no redeeming qualities will start later this week.

Duke o' Mark can start laughing at my pure lack of sense when it comes to cabinets whenever he wants.

Depending on how the cabinet was assembled, perhaps you could replace the speaker board & put in any configuration ya want (got room for 2 - 15s in that thing?)

Nope. It's just wide enough for four 10" drivers stacked up. It was a PA column, which is why I thought it might be an interesting experiment.

I hope the surf band thing doesn't bore me out of my skull. Surf music isn't exactly complex.

If it Does bore you, you'll have more time to scope out the audience. Always a source of amusement or ?;)

Hmm. Maybe a 10 at the top and bottom w/ 2 12s in between, one angled right, one angled left? EDIT: or vice versa?

I ain’t judging, brother! Have some fun :)

Unless the baffle is messed up, I’d just look to get the same size speakers, but try to check that the TS parameters match up well to the enclosure dimensions.

Pretty ambitious mod for a $10 box, don’t you think?!

Got an interesting text earlier...a buddy of mine who is an amazing drummer named Jason Smay (JD McPherson, Los Straightjackets, Hi-Risers) asked me if I’d heard of a new guitar player named McKinley James and would I be interested in playing with him this Friday. I said I hadn’t heard of him, but I was open on Friday as it turns out. He sent me a couple videos of McKinley, who happens to be 15 years old

I texted Jason back and said “this kid is rad!” Jason said, “glad you like him. He’s my son!” Only hitch is it’s a 75 song setlist of mostly semi-obscure blues and R&B and the only rehearsal is on Thursday, then a gig Friday. Yikes

Ah, hell, you can handle it. Besides the kid plays a 'Bird. Can't go wrong!

I can mount speakers better than building a box. As a carpenter, I make a good truck driver-which I did for 23 years.

Well, there’s a good reason you got the request to do the gig. You ARE, The DukeORock.

I’m gonna try...it’s a ton of material to learn and no time to learn it, but I gotta see what this kid can do. He just turned 16. In the video I posted, he was still 13!!!
Plus, his dad Jason, is playing drums on the gig and he happens to be one of my favorite drummers on the planet. The second guitarist on the gig is Austin John, who’s only 25 or so and has that T Bone Walker/Freddie King/Magic Sam thing down cold. I’ve played with that kid before, so there’s some familiarity there at least.

I’m just some dude who owns a bass and had a cancellation on Friday, so I could do it. Me and Jason have seen each other play many times in different bands, so we have a vague idea of what to expect

Laughing isn't judging. It's acknowledging the comedic aspects of a wild goose chase.

Sounds like a plan. If I had a clue how to match the TS parameters to the enclosure dimensions. I can figure out the dimensions in no time. It's the TS stuff I know absolutely nothing about. Time for some intardweb research and misinformation adventures.

There wouldn't be room for any of that anyway. It's just wide enough for the 10 at the bottom, and it's about 52" tall. Off the top of my head, the inside dimensions are a little under 12"x12"x about 50". Some of the 12 is taken up by bracing.

That’s pretty tight!
