Thunderbird Club

Is there any noticeable difference between the 63s and 64s?

In appearance, no. But it's like the difference between a 64 1/2 Mustang and a 1965. The first year of production is usually the most sought after.

My dad had a 64 1/2 Mustang in white. It got t-boned in 1973 while he was going through an intersection and got totaled breaking his leg in the process as well.

Here's my mom and I in the park with my dad's Mustang just barely visible in the background. This pic is either 1969 or 1970.

I really agree! I totally wasn't expecting it to be as killer as it was, especially since I really don't enjoy Gibson/Epiphone basses that much. It sounds like a thunderbird, but its also capable of spitting out more tones than some of the Gibson ones I've tried with just the traditional passive, two volumes one tone setup. Also the sustain is literally to die for! My only problem is that Epiphone discontinued the five string make of the pro model :crying:

What flatwounds did you use on yours? I liked the sound of having really dead GHS Boomers on it, but right now my favorite set of strings to string it with is the D'addario Prosteels. Those strings, in my opinion, are just so ridiculously versatile because I can roll off my treble on my bass's eq or amp if I don't want them for fatter, rounder bass sounds with sparkle or I can have the brightness all the way up for that Entwistle or Geddy type tone! I'd definitely be down to try a nice set of flats on my bass, though :)
35-year-old flatwounds found in the attic of Robbie's Music. Card inside the pack says: Guild, Elizabeth NJ...for ordering a Guild Guitar T-shirt...sales tax 5%!
I've been told they're D'Addario flats. I've put them on three different basses...no problems whatsoever.
If you need a bit more attack with flatwounds you can always try the EHX Nano Steel Leather Bass Expander or something similar.

$14.95 for flats! Talk about a time capsule!

Great pic! My Dad had a '68 fastback, my Mother had a '71 mach 1, and i had a '67 fastback (foolishly sold it in '97)...I remember my dad telling me that he didn't have ac in the '68 so he and his friends would drive around with the windows up pretending they did to impress girls.

I'm sure it could be a great restoration project or if it really has a storied past a cool piece to leave as is.

This photo was in the glass case with the 'bird, and is the actual bass in the picture according to the shop owner who got the bass as a resto project from the original owner. Alas, too far gone, according to the luthier who works there (and whom I've known does some fantastic work)...

Wow, nice list of cars! Funny A/C story. LOL
Crazy how prices have taken off too. I bought the '67 for $3200 and sold it for $3500. Looking recently, and you can't touch a '67 in bondo'ed condition for under $20k.

Oh...and keeping with the tbird topic, my mom had a '67 tbird landau too. Sold it in '96. Turquoise blue, black leather, and brushed aluminum interior, with a 460 under the hood ;)
I used to borrow it a lot. Had a BIG back seat...if you know what I mean ;)

Well guys, i've finished designing my MK II thunderbird. Thank god this club exists cause i had forgotten that the active epiphone bird has a high mass bridge :p. So with that, & fine tweaking my thunderbird shape which is a blend of both my epi Goth & Nikki's spector, it's down right complete. Everything has been marked i.e. the bridge location, the split p/pickup & the SD NYC pickup. The kill switch, the jack, i've also marked which fret is at the start of the cutaway to let me know of my scale length is correct. Stay tuned guys!

p.s. i'm not doing 24 frets on this, 21 is plenty for me, plus i feel like i'd lose space between the end of the fretboard & the split pickups. :D

Sounds great! How about some progress pics?

So, my band have an open air gig at a small festival in three weeks... Since it's summer, I think it will be an appropriate time to give my summer birds (Epi Pelham Blue & Epi Metallic Red) their flying collors...

They will need a setup and new strings, and I was wondering; Would DR "Cool Blue" and DR "Red Devils" strings be too cheesy and over the top for them, or should I go for a more subtle look with either DR "Black Beauties" Or DR "Hi Beams"?

What do you guys think? ;)

Black tapewounds!

Here is my lefty '13 Gibson 'Bird. Still bone stock - including the strings - for now. Got it just before Christmas, and let it sit with the case open for a month or so (SOP around here) to acclimate; then off to Cowtown Guitars for a slight fret end dressing. Have been playing it fairly regularly since, trying to get used to it. 'Way different from my 4001 Rick! Am impressed with the tone; nice mellow growl, and not at all muddy like I thought it might be. So far, I see no need to mess with it at all (other than strings, of course). May I please have a number? Oh, and please note the mandatory rolled-up towel under the neck. Am still not real impressed with the insides of the case; but I have plans..:)

Really cool Bass! I play lefty but no matter where I look I can not find a 5 string Epiphone thunderbird for lefties do you know where I could find one?
