I know, previously my dad had a then state of the art stereo system made by Eko or somebody with tiny speakers; while it was way better than my old transistor radio I dutifully listened to radio Caroline and Luxembourg with there was no definition of instruments in any way. It was only when I got that Pioneer system that I first heard the bass guitar in most mixes (other than Entwistle's solo in My Generation).

Hifi, is a weird thing, I think as musicians we should appreciate it more than most but few do strangely. I find it a very useful tool in working out bits and pieces in stuff we play, not that the Banshees were ever doing anything difficult but it does help me a lot

Great post. My mom was a piano teacher and I remember her telling my dad "hey I really like that Yesterday song by The Beatles, I'm going to buy the sheet music" and that's how she learned everything. I even remember playing Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven with her (her on piano, me on bass) which she would read from the chart. She always said, "you kids got it so easy today with recordings"....today with You Tube not only do you get isolated parts, you can get them at reduced speeds! Crazy..

Yes, it wasn't that long ago when any form of home recording was difficult, reel to reel being the most convinient, then in the early 70's the compact cassette, smaller and with a crappier microphone you still had to hold by your radio speaker unless you were dead posh and you had an audio out and in on your radio. Now as you say, Youtube, so handy but now we have gone about face to crappy speaker quality in most cases from which I can't differentiate instruments again. What you can't find on youtube though isn't worth talking about most of the time once you sort out the endless dross mixed in with the good stuff

We each had our own, mine's chrome plated :laugh: and very heavy, I don't wear it as much anymore.
