Ric 4003 update. The fans who gave it to me wanted to come see me play with Derek Hoke last night, so I decided to play the Ric. It sounded a lot cooler than I thought it was gonna in that context. Got a ton of compliments from fans/friends on the tone too.

Certainly cuts through the mix well. A little too well for my tastes and I do find myself wishing it had a bit more chunk in the lows. The neck pickup is super weak compared to the brdge pickup. The bass is slightly neck divey, but not terrible. I did enjoy playing it more than I thought I would. Leaning toward looking for a replacement neck pickup. Maybe a TV Jones Thunder’Mag? Or maybe I’ll just keep it more for the occasional session and not use it live a whole bunch

Heard good things about the Joe Barden’s

Yeah, those get the best reviews for being very Ric-like, but better. Just wondering if they’ll have that extra low end grunt I’m looking for. Still on the fence, but not really sweating it either :)

The real advantage to the Bardens, besides maintaining the Ric tone, is they're dead quiet, and a bit hi-fi sounding, in a good way. The neck pup has just a tad more output then the stock one. And a slight bit more bass.

That’s great to know, Jeff! But to be clear, you still thought your old Ric was a bit shy in the lows, yes? Then again, we play T Birds, which have a tendency to make most other basses sound a tad ‘small’ :)

Never thought a RIC would be bit neck heavy, but i know i dislike playing them. I respect them in where other people are able to obtain great tone from it: Geddy, Chris Squire, Lemmy, McCartney. But Like Paul Simonon, who owned one too, i don't like the slim profile/wide width neck, the thin body, & thin sounding pickups for my tone. In that retrospect, i love my ric copy - its quite the opposite in what I don't like about the RIC, & with a lot more power in terms of the pickups since they aren't RIC voiced. Just wilkinson mini humbucker at the neck, & a 51 style pbass at the bridge. I'm destined to be a 73nd3r style player as all my pbasses are copies, mixed with a handful of gibson basses i build :)

Maybe you can find someone who owns an audio company that could get them on spec........Oh, wait:laugh:

Paul Goddard made me want one.... saw them in 79 and the tone was so in your face and cool....kinda useless today...never had a balance problem with mine..

Yes Mark. To me, it was not only shy, but a bit muddy. I'm also not a fan of a neck pup being so close to the heel, but i guess, that's why it's called a neck pick-up?, Meh...........The Birds just do it there, and then some. Rics are a tricky thing. They inherently don't sound huge. Sue me anyone for saying so, but it's true. Except for Lemmy. But he was a beast unto any other. The Bardens really shine for their clarity.

But i traded my Ric for a Precision, and happy i did so.

Geeze, i just rambled and it's not even 9pm here.
