That syndrome gets me into lots of trouble. I walked into a post, and my wife has never let me forget it. I'm not sure she knows why I walked into the post, though.
Years ago, a co-worker wrecked a brand new motorcycle because of that. He also had a brand new, and very jealous, wife. He was terrified she would figure it out. That was a pretty extreme case. He got a lot more careful about not staring after that.

I wonder if regular stretching and some rigorous exercise would alleviate that?

No. And it turns out that it can be an indicator to be checked for diabetes.
One of the times I had the worst cramps, and most often, was when I was running the most (with lots of stretching). I had upped my hydration and potassium (among others) intake to account for the increased running- but not nearly enough. In my case it was mostly a mineral issue.

We've all been there.

Reminds me of a very lucky instance on my VFR. I was stopped at a signal in the far right lane of a 4 lane'r. I noticed a nice looking woman walking on the sidewalk and when I turned my attention back to the front the light had just changed. Normally I would have launched as soon as a light changed, but the car to my left had already started forward. ~BAMM!!!~ a city bus going full steam ran the yellow and slammed into the front side of the car spinning it around! If I had gone first, I would have just seen a mass in my peripheral vision before being broadsided by a city bus! (or at least had been part of us both being hit) On that intersection I would have not considered someone, let alone a city bus attempting to run a light as there are 7 lanes (3 in the opposite direction)! I stopped and gave the stunned drive (he was ok as the airbag kept him safe) my # and told him I witnessed the whole thing. I guess I could thank that pretty woman for the distraction!
"Pretty woman, walkin' down the street"

Some of us are just wiggly. Leg cramps are a whole 'nother issue. They are no fun at all when a calf muscle or foot just fires off into a ball of pain at some random time at night. I had those as a kid, and they turn up randomly even now. Staying hydrated helps, as does making sure there's enough potassium in my system (bananas). I will very rarely get hand cramps and foot cramps, and those are entirely a hydration issue.
I wonder if regular stretching and some rigorous exercise would alleviate that?
Hydration and potassium are the key to preventing leg cramping. Another super fast acting cure is dill pickle juice. Just take a couple of swallows of pickle juice and those cramps will stop right away.

I have restless leg (mostly foot actually) syndrome and it's really no big deal. However, it can be annoying to others when you're constantly moving your foot or leg. It's something I have to focus on to stop doing, which is also no big deal. There are worse afflictions one could have.

The night time cramping that quinine relieves is not the spastic cramps that you get from exercise and/or dehydration marked by sudden/intense pain. It is an increase in muscle tone that becomes uncomfortable; that is why the quinine works, it decreases tone. Stretching, hydrating etc. are unlikely to be effective.

Keeping the kids happy and amused and engaged is what we do. It generally works out pretty well. The world is going to be a better place when us old gits get out of the way and let the kids screw it up in a new way.
Sounds to me like you're dadding quite well.

It was a number of years ago. That number being 7 or 8. But I do try to keep involved and try to be spontaneous in a good/helpful/fun way.

Kids are fun when they are very young in that you get to experience all the new things and sense of wonder at the world through their eyes. But as they get older, you get a whole new set of fun things; you get to share interests, show them the things for which you have passion, and try to understand the things for which they have passion.

As a kid growing up in SoCal, we had Dick Lane’s wrestling and roller derby show (The LA Thunderbirds were our team!) on channel 5 KTLA. Lane was a B movie actor who turned to being a wrestling announcer in the early days of TV. It was all bogus, but entertaining.

Both wrestling and roller derby were touring shows when I was a kid. I can remember going to the local arena to see both (not at the same time).

There is some interesting research around stretching. The British Army has done an number of randomized controlled trials around stretching or not before, after, and before and after exercise. It appears that stretching has no effect on attendance at the medical inspection room for exercise related injuries.

I rolled up to a car full of young women and forgot to put my feet down when the motorcycle came to a full stop. I almost fell over. They were unimpressed. They would have been unimpressed anyway, so there is that. I do not fess up to that one too often, but it is funny. I felt really dumb, and for good reason.
