Thunderbird Club

...and the vibe of RL's ultra-cool vibe encouraged Marvin Gaye to make this - (note cowbell) and this was Pt 1 - when played on commercial radio stations - they divided it here, and played part2 later!

That’s hilarious when the bass on the track slides way up and the bassist realizes he missed it! Great tune anyway

I use ball ends on my JC

I put a Hipshot on my JC. I had the 3 point for quite some time, but since I had the Hipshot on everything else, I figured it deserved one too. I was undecided about how to put it on because of the angle and arch of the top, so I took it into L&M and had them install it (and do a string change/set up at the same time).

Pretty transparent if you run it inline? I’d only ever use a Boss tuner if I was using a dedicated tuner out on the amp. Inline, it colors the sound a lot. Super noticeable on upright. These days I’ve had pretty good luck with the TC PolyTune, but even though it’s fairly transparent, I don’t run it inline
Well, you’re the recording guru and I value your posts. A lot. TBH, the tuners in my three practice areas are cheap Monoprice mini pedals. They work fine. I can’t tell the difference going direct into any of my amps or inline through the tuner pedals. Am I really that deaf? I’m being serious....played loud as a kid and through college. We didn’t know about ear protection in the seventies. Attended more concerts than I can count. Sabbath, Clash, Yes, Bowie, Uriah Heep, the Boss, dozens of others, many forgotten and a Kiss show I’d like to forget. And every NYCH tour. I have tinnitus that is variable depending on the environment. I guess my question is how do I know when it is coloring the sound?

Did you see Uriah Heep with Gary Thain on bass?

If you can’t hear the difference, then you’re good to go! It’s probably negligible at best anyway. To me, it’s way more noticeable on upright than electric anyway :)

I have that too. The loud music in youth is probably a negligible contributor compared to time around things that go bang in the army. Sometimes that C# is loud, other times it isn't bad. But I need background noise all the time - music, TV, something to distract from the ring.

Skiing and kayaking are the times that I reliably get quiet relief.

Right there with you on the "played loud in the 70s". Ear protection? We don't need no stinkin' ear protection! Yeah, actually we did.:help:

I think I may need to try that look.

1970s ?

These guys rocked a kimono on occasions, and silk just anytime.

Confident album sub title... but that was about their last shot

Almost right.

Why not 85 to match the series ?

Long, but super fun day yesterday. Two recording sessions and two gigs. Not quite as tough as it sounds, but not easy.
First session at 10:00am. At a House of Blues studio called The Cave. The tracking room is a recreation of the original Sun studio. Exact same dimensions and damping materials. The only difference was the addition of 5 iso rooms. The control room is another story. Very modern and state of the art meets some cool vintage stuff. David Leonard engineered and Kenny Greenberg produced and played guitar. Look those guys up if you’re a recording nerd. These dudes are very serious.

That’s a rare 1977 API console. Ocean Way monitors that were close to 8ft tall and 4ft wide. Sounded AMAZING. Nearfields were Genelecs

Also this Neve sidecar. The outboard gear was insane. Pultec eq’s, TubeTech, Vintage Urie, Burl converters...basically everything :) the mic collection was jaw dropping.
The artist is Mark Collie. The first session was his live band (myself, Steve Latanation on drums, Jesse Isley on guitar) plus Kenny Greenberg on additional guitar.
first song was straight up rockabilly, so I used my 1948 Epiphone B4 upright.

I told the engineer I much prefer certain ribbons for ‘that’ sound I like, but he said he always starts with condensers like a U87 or U67. Lovely mics, but I’d never use em on upright. He’s a very famous engineer, so I kept my mouth shut! After about 20 minutes, he switched to an AEA R84 ribbon (the same mic I always use on that upright) and it sounded great. I’m sure he was used to carved top, darker sounding uprights. All the classic rockabilly stuff was done on brighter, plywood basses.
The next song was on electric, but was still kinda vintage sounding, so I grabbed my 1967 Hofner 500/1. I was a tad apprehensive about using it since the engineer produced a Paul McCartney record (!), but he hooked it up through a Demeter tube DI, had me play a few minutes, then got on the talkback and said “dude, that bass is fvcking amazing!” That felt good :)

After we cut 3 songs, Mark’s band got sent home so they could set up for the evening session. All A List top tier musicians...and me, for some inexplicable reason. Kenny normally uses Michael Rhoades on bass, so it was intimidating to say the least. They asked me to stick with the Hofner since it sounded so good earlier, but it quickly became obvious that wasn’t the right bass for the more modern material. I switched to my MusicMan Sabre, cranked the lows, pulled back the highs and it worked perfectly. That was a fun day!
After that, I quickly packed up and headed across town to play with Derek Hoke, followed by a set with Mike Lynch (thankfully) at the same venue. Back on my T Bird for the live stuff and all was right with the world :)
Sorry for the long winded post. Just figured the recording nerds like myself would find it interesting!

I did! And I’m not even a recording nerd.
(Perhaps an ‘old poopie’ nerd though)

He Duke! Is that the Michael Rhoades that plays with Bonamassa? Saw him in November. Played a Lull Bird a few songs.

Good to know, I plan on seeing Bonamassa later this year
