Best arrangement of Stepping Stone ever.

As is often the case, the original was best. B&H were more pop than the Monkees wanted, but they were a great song-writing team. I still spontaneously start singing this, Last Train to Clarksville, and one or two others they wrote.

I had no idea there were so many covers. I can't find Sam Phillips' cover on the 'tubes.

The Raiders' has a more fierce delivery, but same arrangement... I like the Monkees' increase in intensity by the 2nd verse. Also the bass/guitar doubling in the short line into the chorus is kinda phat and nice.

Hey guys:

Got the Epi Thunderbird IV in a trade today. Pretty cool bass. It came with a decent hard shell case. I do have a few minor concerns...

The 4 set screws for the neck look either rusted or discolored, except for one. They were a slight bit loose, so I snugged them up. Also, the screws for the pickups look a bit rusted also. Rest of the bass looks like it’s in great shape, so I’m kinda scratching my head about the rusty screws.

The 3 bolt bridge is pretty silly. I adjusted the trussrod and set the action as low as I could... action is still a little high but I can’t lower the bridge any more. Looks like a new bridge is in order.

The strings (roundwounds) are relatively new. Whomever put them on didn’t know what they were doing. No biggie, I’m going to put some GHS Precision Flats on.

Also, the neckdive is noticeable. I believe that relocating the strap button to the heel of the neck should resolve the issue.

Last thing...

I usually (naturally) place my plucking hand (thumb) on the neck pickup. With the Bird, my thumb naturally goes to the bridge pup. Not a big deal, I just like the tone (for most the songs I play) with my thumb on the neck pup. That’s something that will happen once I play the bass for a while. Something I need to think about consciously now but will eventually come naturally over time.

I guess I can consider myself a member to the Bird Club. I’ll be frequenting this thread often.

I'm with ya this one. Never really ever been a monkees fan, but their Stepping Stone arrangement has always sounded best to my ears. Same with Last Train to Clarksville.

That said, back in the day if offered a choice of tickets to see Paul Revere and the Raiders vs the Monkees, I'd take the Raiders every time.

There are a lot of threads in the GP that discuss this. Sorry, I don’t seem to have one bookmarked or I’d post a link. I’ve had success with thin wood veneer strips. Start with a thickness of about .010 and about 1/3 inch wide cut to the with of the neck pocket. Put it at the heel. The crazy Canuck Dave has several vids where he does it. Here’s a short one. WARNING, some of the language is NSFW or children.

The model you got is not typical as you begin to venture across their line of offerings. I had a bolt-on model, then an Epi Blackbird, also a bolt-on. Way different... and the Classic Pro I stumbled upon is yet another story.
I love my Fender P Bass also, but they are different animals.
