Soprano sax played well is worse than alto sax played badly. Ever hear a bad alto sax player?...
...of course, that's not a nice thing to say, and maybe it's just my natural recoil to anything even distantly associated with Kenny G.

*shrug*
I never got Kenny G. I didn’t bother to analyze why, But nothing I heard of his ever excited me. Neither his playing nor his tone offered anything I cared to hear.
He’s hardly the only popular musician I feel that way about.

We do what we can

My random factiod........I've never worn pants to a Nasty Habits show.

Given your legs, why would you?

That's exactly why he's so popular - his audience doesn't want to be excited by music.

I like alto sax in the right hands. It's a really sensitive instrument, requires a lot of skill I think. Subtlety and nimbleness with breath and melody make it work. Intonation has to be sweet.
Played by a more brutal hand, can't hang at all... gets too "honky", not so elastic. Like getting a spike driven into my ears.

Looking at you David Robert Jones....

We are musicians, so we listen closely and think about music. We get excited about new approaches and sounds.

Most non musicians hear it differently. They often can’t/don’t even hear the separate instruments.

I was asked by an elderly gentleman why I listen to such tiring music, when I could listen to [bland] music and 'relax'. Funnily enough and iirc his complaint was about the Brubeck Quartet -- 'you think this is busy?'

[Classical] woodwind instruments in general tend to be a bit irritating (to me). They're okay ensemble in an orchestra, but I'd rather clean out [insert something unpleasant] than listen to a flute concerto or wind quintet. Cello, viola, violin, piano, brass, a bit of singing ... bring it here. Woodwinds? Umm, the fire's looking a bit low, chuck that bassoon on it can you?* **

* that remark was not remotely influenced by any personal animosity I may harbour towards bassoon or clarinet players of my acquaintance.

** or my sister being an oboe player.

But they are. It’s so weird. Then again, many people think I’m weird. I’m good with that

I guess what I meant was he isn't challenging and his audience doesn't want to be challenged and challenging music is exciting.

I presume you meant to type "trying" music, not "tiring" music. :)

My wind quintet is beans, beer, bratwurst, and sauerkraut.
