Thunderbird Club

View attachment 3519694 Hey all... any requirements for membership that a just-starting-to-learn-bass newb needs to fulfill, beyond being the happy owner of a Thunderbird?
Epi IV in my case, all of 10 hours' string-time into figuring this gorgeous piece of lumber out.
The only requirement is to have been chosen by Thunderbirds. It will teach you now that it chose you, and that's all that matters.

Now, there is the matter of the grass skirt, ride through town on a horse, and all that.

Welcome BuddhaFingas,

Please ask every question you'd like to here, the guys and gals enjoy helping out and there's a vast pool of knowledge here for you. Also, if you're just starting to learn we have some excellent players here as well. The usual initiation is to wear a grass skirt and coconut shell bra while dancing around a large fire, ;).
You are #777 here, again, welcome!
...

We do need video of the coconut dance for verification...

What day is it? If it's a weekend and the flights are cheap, I'll be there. Maybe a day late on account of time zones.

Wait, are you ready to risk tilting the earth on it's axis? Both twins are not allowed in the same hemisphere.

But then, I did just buy another drum kit for just the occasion. It's a properly ratty Rether ('70s Pearl stencil kit made in Taiwan) for just an occasion like this. It has no bottom heads on the toms, so it will have a '70s and '80s thunk to it, and it's currently wrapped in aluminum can silver. Pretty funny, really. If we do this right, it could be in a shipping container soon, and I could be in that container with it.

Thunderbird

It's a Thunderbird Thursday night because we won't get within cooee of a plum Fri/Sat spot. Customs would doubtless confiscate and fumigate you, so prolly best not.

I have something important coming up this week, so I changed my strings a little earlier than planned. Same SIT Power Steels, but for the first time I tried 50-105 instead of 45-105. It's slight, but I think I like the beefier high strings.

I like a more balanced set w/beefier strings also.

Cool, Thunderbird Thursday...

Well... not actually a Thunderbird. But that's ok, it's not actually Thursday.
Hoping we get treated to video clip of your band soon, Lovin the audio clips.

Serious question time, though not one I foresee being able to act on.

The 76-79 THUNDERBIRDs have been mentioned a lot recently.

Would I be correct in thinking have carry a ‘vintage’ price level, but distinctly less so than a 60s model?

Correct. Vintage pricing but not VINTAGE pricing.

Is that the Flea Signature set...

...If so, I Haven't tried those yet.

You and I have similar sound goals, I might need to give a set a try.
No, they are not. Just regular RC Boomers. I have not tried those--and don't recall what the special nature of them is as well.

I tried regular Boomers early on after getting the bass, but it must have been relatively unimpressive. Yesterday was a noticeable "Wow!" factor. Thick with punch and no clank in sight. Even played one song with a pick and still had a sweet sound. They even sound good at home! The E is a little more loud than the rest of the strings. I was having to play it accordingly, but will adjust the PU tonight.

Indeed. For reasons beyond the extra age. They do not sound exactly the same. No doubt due to the different PSs. I wouldn't take anything for my '64 T-Bird or '64 Embassy. While I like the '76, I could sell it. Now that I have the VP with the right strings, I'm not sure I don't like it as well is not a little more. Maybe.

My experience with Boomers left me soured on GHS products. I understand that not liking one product means nothing about others, life is too short and there are so many string choices so I just took GHS off my list. It was an easy cull. My experiments seem to be mostly limited now to DR, D'Addario, Rotosound and some others.
