Thunderbird Club

To all those running flats on their THUNDERBIRDS...

It has been a few weeks since I saw Steve Harris and his back up band and I am still thinking about flats on the bird. And the Slinky's on there now are just as meh as they were before, only getting worse, so I think it isn't too long until it is time to change them out.

Having had a less than optimal experience with cobalt flats in the past, I won't go with those.

Between Chromes and Roto 77s, what does the hive mind choose? Or is there something else I should be thinking about?

I really liked Rotos on the VP and Fender Flats on the '76 (which have more mids than Chromes), TIs sound good on the '76 as well. Cobalts were nice, not great on the VP.

I like Cobalts on the VP.
I liked Chromes and Fender Flats on my Casady, both until they went dead. It now has Labellas, which suit it.
I have had Chromes on my J for years, and they work well.
Not sure if any of this is helpful to @PillO ...

I used to use Chromes, but switched to Cobalt flats. Big help, right?

Not currently running flats on any of my birds, but had Cobalt Flats on the VP earlier in the year, will probably go back to those, I really liked them.

I run Roto Flats on my SG Supreme and like them enough to try them on my VP or 2015. The Rotos are IMHO a very traditional sounding flat. I find the Cobalts to be much brighter on the top end with more detail in the bloom and not quite as deep as the Rotos but a very good match for the VP which has naturally more agressive and brighter fuller range pickups than most of my birds.

FWIW I'm running La Bella Black Tapes on my Goth and it has a very unique sound, quite a bit different from my other birds. Note - it has after market pups and an active preamp that might have a whole lot to do with the sound as well.

I like Chromes on my P basses and La Bella Tapes on my Jazz basses. Don't like Roto Tapes on anything I've tried. I like Black Beauties on my Stingrays and other overly bright basses. TI's on my Alembics work very well. And D'Addario Nickel rounds on my Spectors work well.

be cool if you posted some sound clips of some of those setups

Having a late-ish morning, so I A/B'd my Epi Classic Pro and MIJ 80s P bass. Un-amp'd. The 'Bird won, an easy decision.
It's hard, a bit, because I put some enthusiasm into making that Pbass my own. I wanted that to happen, see. Personal reasons... but the 'Bird sits right, the neck is notably more comfortable, it brings itself to be played. Nuff said there, but she's my girl now.
I'm probably either selling the P or doing a deal for a six string with a TB'er. If I don't love the six, off it'll go, and I won't bond with it if it doesn't sit well right away. And I've got that Ibby SR505 I'm getting used to anyway...
I make my bandmates roll their eyes and shake their heads...

Been poking around the string forum. Anyone tried DR Legends (flats) on their 'bird?
I have not. However, my understanding is that they are tonally very, very similar to GHS Precision Flats, which I do have on several basses. Therefore a tad darker and thicker in the lower mids. Great mids as well. Old School thump, which I like. If true, they would be almost the opposite of Chromes which are modern sounding (a flat for people who like rounds, as it's been described).

One of my favorite songs (bands). Absolutely wore out the Live album. Twice, I think. What a band!
I’ve talked of my affection for them before. They were generally dismissed by critics. But sold a ton of records early on and had a resurgence with We’re An American Band and the cover of Locomotion. Most players I know really appreciate them. About as American as it gets. they made 8th grade special for me.

Thanks all for your replies on Roto 77s v Chromes. I'm still thinking, but leaning now to Chromes.

I have tried and used both (not on a tbird).

RS are my favorite flat period...for 10 minutes, then the seem to loose that zing and die (IMHO) very quickly to a dull thud, which is just not my thing.

Chromes have that similar zing, mellow out (mildly) in a few days, and then stay that way for a long time.

Slinky cobalt flats are my go to flat, even though not a true flat. If I had to run flats, Chromes would be my choice. I still may try them on the tbird eventually...

Good Luck!

Lol, that venerable, humongous Quonset hut of sonic chaos... saw most of my favorite shows there.

Are you kiddin' me??
can you pass the test?....
