Thunderbird Club

Away through Wednesday and staying in a hotel hoping around visiting relatives. Lots of down time and I need to get in playing time. I normally travel with a Rumble 25 that is perfect for hotel practice, with or without headphones. But after some of you waxed on about the Vox Bass Amplug recently, I picked one up today. It suits the purpose. Doesn’t hold a candle to the $100 Rumble and is comparatively expensive at $45. But it will work when PG&E shuts off my power. So here’s a pic of my rig for the next four days. I need to commission @Gaolee to find me a ss Thunderbird. View attachment 3576248

Dude, that’s some serious dedication....for years, I traveled over 70% of the time for work and it would have never occurred to me to bring a bass setup....good for you!:thumbsup:

Several years ago someone posted pics of an Epi bolt-neck Bird that they installed two Dimarzio Model One pickups on. I have not been able to find that picture anywhere regardless of what description I use to search for it. Looked cool and probably sounded fantastic.

I found this link to someone adding a Model one to their Epi:

my Epiphone Thunderbird mod

I found this pic but it is not the original bass I was mentioning. Model One in place of the MM pickups would be interesting.

I have a bolt-on Epi and a Model One. The idea has been to route a new spot right up at the neck for the Model One. That's where I think they sound best. Then the three post would be wired V-V-V. No tone control. It will happen someday.

I’ve done similar using my zoom pedal as a headphone amp. Works well.

If I run into another Bird, I'll be into a Model One for it. Maybe two- that sounds intriguing.

Depends on the airline. Alaska is surprisingly affordable. You have to bring Jeff along if you plan to make the trip. I have spare Thunderbirds that both of you can play. I even have an Epi with a thick poly finish that even an alien cannot dissolve.
You ARE certain about the ladies removing most of their clothes? I DO have my priorities in order: 1. Ladies 2. Basses 3. Hmmm, I guess those are my only two priorities.

That was the original idea I think. Billy Sheehan had to do with its design, if I'm not mistaken anyway. He'd added a sidewinder type humbucker right up at the neck of his Fender P (like an EB-0) and routed that signal to its own amp/cab, or something like that, to get a more present low-end... then the Model One happened.

Wow. You’re good. Thanks. I would so love to buy that. But a new bass isn’t in the cards, at least until sometime next year. Kind of bleeding cash at the moment. I haven’t shared this, but my beloved mother-in-law (and I mean that sincerely, she was absolutely wonderful) passed away a few days ago so we’re dealing with some unexpected grief and expenses.

Not sure it’s dedication as much as doing something that makes me happy. I’m still working to get back to being a player again. Even twenty to thirty minutes an evening is an important part of the journey back. When I’m away for work, it’s a good stress reliever and takes the mind of the mundane crap I have to deal with twelve hours a day. I gave up watching basketball years ago. I don’t care for football anymore either (letting the Chargers abandon San Diego was the final straw). I still love baseball and playing my basses.

Losing people, esp when you really like them, is hard. So sorry, heart goes out your way.
When you remember them out loud it helps them to be nearby- and that's not to be flip, it just helped me some when I lost a best friend... dulled the grief just a little. Sometimes it brought a good remembrance, made me laugh instead of cry. Honor life, you know?
Peace on you guys.

Sorry for your loss. I remember your praise for your relationship with her.

So sorry to hear that. You and your wife have my sincere condolences. I wish there were words that could make it easier to deal with. If you loved her that much one consolation is she no doubt felt the same towards you. Nothing can take that away.

I'm sorry for your loss. Now ignore us and go look after your family.

So sorry to hear that, my friend. Prayers and hugs for all of you. Take time to remember and share the fun and funny times, too.
