Your opinion pretty much sums it all up for me as well.

Pete has always had an ego bigger than he deserved. I've never really considered him a stellar guitarist or a phenomenal vocalist, just a better than average player with lots of stage presence. His trademark windmills and vertical jumps, "outta control rage" instrument smashing and bad boy attitude were his legacy for me, not his guitar licks which I can hear being played equally well on any given day by teenagers at Guitar Center.

I remember reading an article years ago that was comparing the after song guitar destruction mayhem Townsend and Hendrix were doing at the time. The author stated that JH burning his guitar on stage created a surreal almost sensual experience vs PT smashing his guitar on stage, which was more like witnessing a violent rape. No doubt about it, Pete was upstaged by a better player who also put on a better show. I think that still eats at his ego.



I've never been a huge follower of The Who for reasons unknown. I like plenty of their songs, am entertained with Pete's on stage antics and Daltry's rambling vocals, always was in awe of the huge talent and complete originality in John's style of playing, and even kinda liked Keith's off timing beat. All that said, I've just never bought many of their albums. A best of The Who LP would scratch every itch I have for them.

I don't think sensuality, in that classic sense, was ever Pete's point. Different, angstier, more tantrum-like energy.

I remember SRV's work on Bowie's Let's Dance album, and being way impressed. After he became a big star on his own stage I was less so.

It wasn't that I didn't like his playing, but now that sound was no longer trapped in a specific context, and relied only on itself as the attraction. I find it difficult to be engaged with virtuosity on its own merit, and his songwriting was just a vehicle for his guitar prowess.

Great player, fun to watch him in a good band, but I still see him as just a part of something and not a sensation, per se.

I may just bore easily.

You're wrong!

I understand what you are saying. But for me, artists like SRV, JB, Claypool, Michael Schenker, et al. are worth seeing for the pure joy of seeing someone great perform at their best. It isn't like watching top players who are great members of a group; it is one standout player (all of whom seem to give the other players the spotlight as well).

In some ways, I suppose it is like watching a bear ride a bicycle - it is the spectacle of it all.

Great, now you have depressed me, thinking about all the great players that I will never be close to in ability. That's Ok, I groove and have fun. It is never work for me, just pure entertainment.
