Thunderbird Club

Ufff, I was really getting nervous about the crack, it's good to know it's nothing major. Other than that, everything is great about the bass.

I'd bring it to a local luthier, and get it checked. If it is only a finish crack, I ask about the cost of repairs. And get it repaired.

Hello! I just got an awesome 2006 Gibson Thunderbird. I'm really happy with how it sounds, but just noticed it has a tiny crack (or is it just the finish?). Anyone of you had a similar experience? Should I be worried or is it normal? View attachment 3689756 View attachment 3689759
Beautiful Bird you have! If you're not already a club member be sure to ask for a number and our Queen will be by to gladly add you to the family.

As for the crack, it's absolutely nothing to worry about for now. From the picture it does look like the crack in the finish is being caused by some slight movement in the wood. Could be the wing was bumped hard or maybe the wing is expanding or contracting at a different rate than the through body portion of the neck. In either case it's nothing serious yet.

The wing is glued into the neck block using a huge full length V joint that runs the entire length of the body. That's at least twice the glued surface contact area that other builders (Fender, Spector...) offer who utilize a flat butt joint (both the upper and lower wings utilize a V joint). It's an incredibly strong joint and shouldn't cause your bass any structural problems beyond aesthetics.

If over the next fifty years you notice the crack opening up or starting to run the length of the wing you can take it to a Luthier to have them inject some glue in the joint and refinish it. In the meantime, rock that baby and enjoy the mojo!

Did a quick montage of my gig tools

Still not sure which one of the 4 strings will get flats...

nice to have choices....unfortunately, if I used flats I wouldn't play out as much as I do because of the varied repertoires around here...I can easily make rounds sound like flats but not vice versa..
The EB Cobalts give me-if I want it-all the piano sound I would ever want. My preference for the tone(s) I wanna put out front. Tweetchie zone.

Couldn't even finish the last day huh? :roflmao:  :roflmao:

Seriously though -
Huge congrats man! The way I see it, with the way the retirement age and rules keep changing, I'm working 'till I'm dead. I saw a meme a while back that said "I have enough money to retire today and live comfortably for the next 12 hours." Sadly, rings far too true.
I figure on ten more years or incapacity, whichever comes first. Anybody want to place any bets?

shouldn't be a "Tweetchie zone"....we've all been playing for a long time and have our tastes....myself, for what I do, I cannot afford a flatwound "thunk" when I slap or pop, a technique that's almost mandatory by one of the BLs (and material) of one of the bands I play with....all good, it takes all kinds...:thumbsup:

Which is pretty much what I mean by "to each his own". If I needed to 'slap and pop' to get a gig, I'd be SOL. Bone spur on right thumb eliminates any possibility of doing that(w/o accompanying howls of pain:eek:). Plus, personal taste, I don't like the sound of it, no matter who's doing it or why. I fully recognize that that prolly puts me firmly in the category of "Grumpy Olde Phart"-which I am(#228).
