I still haven't decided whether to refinish it, or if I do, what color it needs to be. I'm going back and forth between metal flake purple, metal flake jade green, and metal flake orange. Being subtle is not what a 'Bird is all about.

I vote purple metalflake! Did you see the purple (violet?) metalflake Fackenbacker with mirrored pickguard in another thread here recently? Bad ass looking, total disco. A T-Bird done up similarly would be too cool. I'll have to see if I can find it and post a link.

That picture did it! I just sprung for some Chinabuckers to finish the chrome out project on the 1991. Next step will be to assemble everything. That picture did it! I just sprung for some Chinabuckers to finish the chrome out project on the 1991. Next step will be to assemble everything. Fralin makes some nice pick ups for Epi and Gibby Birds.

Thanks Andii, I actually have two of them. The last owner did his best to destroy this one.

I guess it was finished in gold glitter once. 32" scale.

The bare would actually looks really cool to me. Metal as hell.

It still somehow has the charm even without paint. Why is the tone control hole filled? & really 32" scale? Might be my next build later on if i can't find one for a decent price in good condition

Tone control probably ditched.

I'm having the tone control taken out of my Epi and replaced with a selector switch. I pretty much never use tone controls.

My schedule ought to clear out a little in about a month. I'll keep you posted.

In the mean time, the bolt-on 'Bird is about to visit Mike Lull for a Dimarzio One installation right up by the end of the neck. It will become a three pickup thump and funk machine. With that configuration, it might need a more flamboyant color, too, but one step at a time...

Yep, I did. He was pretty amused.

Now I just have to get a Dimarzio One and get the bass out to him. I think I paid $250 for the bass with its case. It was absolutely pristine when I got it. Since then, I moved the upper strap button, so there's one hole drilled in it. Now it needs a few more, just to make sure it is really mine. If it was ratty, I would just do the route and be done with it, but since it's as nice as it is, I'm going to spring for Mike doing the work. Which will make it a whole lot more expensive bass than it was. I'm about to flunk economics and have another unique 'Bird.

Not true. Economics accounts for such intangible things as buyer preference and unquantifiable intrinsic value.

I just ordered a Dimarzio One. Gotta love the internet. It is how a cunning plan comes together. And how I end up with less money than I started with, but what's money anyway except what you can do with it.

The Chinese chrome three pointer you guys put me onto arrived today.
I have installed it and it looks the goods!
A couple of interesting points about the Chinese bridge. Firstly, it was shipped to me in less than a week from Sydney! Maybe they have a distributor in Australia.
The Chinese bridge will not install on the Gibson posts (too tight). Luckily the Chinese posts will happily screw into the Gibson inserts. Really happy about that, as it means that I didn't have to change the Gibson inserts, which are still lovely and tight on this bass.
The Chinese D saddle is much too low and the string bottomed out! The rest are pretty good. But I installed all the black Gibson saddles for the sake of uniformity and she set up nicely. A little more tweaking needed but she is getting there. I might treat her to a set of new Roto nickel rounds when the new tuners arrive. A set of chrome Grovers are on their way.

I have a couple of decisions to make- bridge cover and/ or tailpiece? Not worried about drilling her, as I have already have drilled for the pickup rings and I don't intend to sell it. Not sure if it would decrease the value anyway.

Personally, I don't like cover on bridge or pickup.... however, tailpiece always makes nice, and if not, why not strings through body ?

By cons, it is better to have it installed by a luthier.

Loll probably, I never use tone either (it's kinda rare that i'll back the tone off), but to me removing the tone from the surface & just leaving it in the cavity is weird.
