never been a fan of how semi hollow basses resonate against the body......that said, was really impressed with the quality, workmanship and sound of the JC I tried at NAMM...can't help but wonder how they stack up against these..

When we had that 6 night a week for 5 1/2 years gig in Miami, I would come in each night, put the TBird case on the jukebox, remove my 'Bird, close the case, and tip it up on the headstock end leaning against a wall. Doing that some 1500+ times weakened the end to where it split. Repairs were attempted-unsuccessfully-so the case was replaced, first with a keyboard semi-soft case(awkward)then a "Rockbag"tm gig bag, and a year or so ago, the Coffin tm case. Aren't you glad you asked?

IIRC the Silver Stars and Red Devils are the same string just different colors. I think the Pure Blues are an alloy that sounds more like stainless steel but feels more like nickel. I tried Pure Blues on a Fender Jazz but felt they had too much zing, clank and finger noise for my taste. On the JC where you have the rotary selector I might be ok with them if I could dial out the top end noise.

Guess I'm gonnahavta break down and get a JC some day. Dang Epiphone, wish they'd quit dragging their feet on the VP NR!

Epiphone dragging their feet gives you time between buying each. Because you will buy both...

I think the red devils, black beauties, silver stars, and cool blues, are all the same string with the same coating (save colour).

The pure blues are "unique Quantum-Nickel". I find them quite warm and not a lot of zing (some when first put on, but it abates quickly). As for finger noise, well that is a technique problem . I would say that they sound and feel a lot like NYXLs with more bottom end growl.

If the case you are referring to is the original T-bird black case w/yellow interior - I'm not surprised as it was a POC. My '64 OHSC is currently in storage and I would never considering using it. Besides that, the thread holding the perimeter piping on it is degrading. Hey, it's gotta be worth about $500 by vintage standards... Gotta say, a '64 Fender HSC is still doing it's job unless dropped from a pick-up truck and ran over once or twice since new.

Try the pu a bit higher. My JC will easily overdrive the input of my PF50T. It has labella flats on it now, but with roundwounds or newish Chromes, it was a snarling beast.

Oh it overdrives the input on the Traynor without any bother already. I'll get the screwdriver out later and see what happens. I wanted to like the DM strings as they are the JC 'approved' string. Not a fan of .80 A strings though.

Such a bad design - I'm not joking, I could stack 2 T-birds in it and close the case. The few times I did use mine early on was only made possible by attaching a leather strap across the neck yoke to hold it down. I actually flew with my '63 II in its OHSC once and when I picked it up after landing - the strap was yanked out of the yoke. Miraculously the bass was ok - a testament to those bla-bla'ing how fragile they were/are. That happened because there was too much empty space that allowed the bass to violently shift when jostled. Give me one of the later brown/fuchsia HSC's any day of the week.

The case that came with the Pro V was fairly flimsy. The case for my std IV is better (if huge). The case that came with the VP seems better yet (as it should). All Epiphone cases. I wouldn’t trust any if them to an airport baggage smasher, tho the case for the VP has better odds of survival.

The Epiphone screened HSC's that are tapered (not a hard rectangle) and have grey form-fitted interiors (to me) are sufficiently safe to protect the bass and I would fly with one w/o worry. Not sure what other look like or how they are made.

I'd like to believe that the DMs on your JC are old and dead. When new, they were historically compared to RS66.

Yes, definitely not paperboard or whatever some "HS"C's are made of. And not that heavy either - the brown/fuchsia version is both bigger and heavier, more like a big Fender G&G case.
