Thunderbird Club

I have to say I'm disappointed that so many are still trying to play gigs to crowds while this ninja virus is making its rounds. Don't know what to say really. I'm even at odds with some of my local music-can friends.

Disappointed is all.
Our April 9 gig has been cancelled, and our singer is probably going to more or less self isolate. She's going to work, but that's it. That's probably the best policy.

I'm not as diligent about isolation, but hand washing has gotten obsessive to the point my wife has hand cream stashed here and there. All three bands I play with are still getting together for now. And the gym is still open. As a friend says, it's probably the cleanest it has ever been. It is only a matter of time before it gets closed for the duration, though.

I suspect is it only a matter of time before all kinds of random people start turning up with this bug. Apparently it can be asymptomatic in some people, which means nobody knows they have it, including them. So, it spreads. We just flat don't know enough about it to relax at all. Hang on, we are in for a bumpy next few weeks, if not months.

Expensive, but....

It needs its covers, though.

I have thought about saving up and coughing up for a '64 or '65 one day. But what would I do with it? I would be protective of it, and it would end up staying in its case most of the time. So what's the point? I probably ought to sell the EB-2, since that's mostly what it does these days. After Almost 40 years, I can't imagine not having it, but on the other hand, it hardly comes out to play any more, no matter how good I think it sounds.
I started recording with my EBO and it really works well for reggae stuff. But I am immediately thinking about a substitute for gigging.

It made it through 5 decades without a headstock break, but that’s a relatively cheap old bass.

I can’t imagine spending upwards of 5K and gigging with a 60s Gibson.

Took the NR on Saturday and practiced social distancing.Took breaks outside in the van..Looks like that will be the last gig for a while even though I'm booked for the rest of the year
On a side note I talked with a friend in another band about the current restrictions of gatherings of over 50 people..he says that works for him because his band can't draw more than 25 people anyway. :)

Take care.

really sorry to hear...my sister is in the same boat and a teacher as well...the guys' I play with in one band sole income is from gigging.....tragic..
Well, not really like, just acknowledge. It's a big problem. I guess we will support our son if he needs it. His girlfriend has the advantage of being still in school, so there's less expectation that she will be a free-standing adult yet. I am pretty sure her income was from working in some kind of teen-clothes type store somewhere in LA, and that's all down the tubes for now. So, she's managing something like an hour or two a week, which means whatever California's minimum wage is.

A few of the people the kid plays with have alternate income streams. Most do not have day jobs. All of them are going to be scrambling badly. Both of the guys he shares an apartment with are dependent upon playing for their income. There's a whole lot of hurt going around, and it happened in a huge hurry.

The kid says he has some savings, but that's not going to last forever. I hope this is done with in a month. If it isn't, there's going to be an even bigger disruption than there is now.

I don't know what my son will do. His income is from playing.
I just had a talk with my daughter. She hasn’t flown since Thursday and is thinking she won’t get sent anywhere for the foreseeable future. Had to assure her the B of Mom and Dad will help if it comes to that. She’s single, no kids, so she’ll get through it. But my heart goes out to all those who have worked so hard and suddenly face uncertainly.

I was supposed to get on planes. It isn't happening again until mid-April. Assuming that doesn't get cancelled.

The crazy thing is that both the kid and his girlfriend were thinking about coming up from LA, just to get away for the duration. Talk about going from the frying pan and into the fire! He decided that it was probably a bad idea, since he wasn't sure if he could get home if he did that. And, he wouldn't be around if he got a call to play or record or teach or anything else. So, he's staying in LA for now. That's the level of confusion and uncertainty that we all face.

This thing is moving to fast to figure out in real time. Stay safe and stay healthy, if you can. It seems to be all any of us can do for the time being.

Until two weeks ago I was playing three gigs on average per week. Last one exactly a week ago. Done until further notice...
Hey man I'm not pointing the finger at anyone, but at a point I have to remark... I know one or two in my own neck of the woods who are still playing where they're able, and I spoke up about it- figuring I might incur a rash, but frankly I'm past worrying about that kind of thing if I think it's meaningful enough.

I appreciate seeing what I'd call good sense! I've been trying for 58 years to get hold of it, glad to see it's still there, within reach

so when is the price supposed to come down on these ?

I had a 70, 72 and a 73. Still have my Karmann Ghia convertible. I guess I might have time to work on it. Won’t be gigging or rehearsing for a while.

was the ‘73 a curved windscreen & strut front suspension model ? We called them a SuperBug, yet never called any of the previous editions Bugs, just Beetles. Shows the power of advertising.

officially - on the registration papers - they were all just Volkswagen Sedan. Until our final model, the ‘76, which was also the end of VW assembly in Australia. The final model was the only one that was officially called a Beetle. Flat windscreen, superbug engine, back to torsion bar front suspension, flat dash but - who hoo - front blinkers in the bumper, not on wings, and kept the elephant feet rear lights.
I’m guessing they had left over bits and just did a unique final run.

I like the K-G, which is yours? The first or second series ?

Huh. I thought they made Rabbits/Golfs for a couple of years in Oz.

I had a ‘78 Scirocco for a couple years in the mid eighties. What a POS. Very unreliable ignition system. Looked cool though.

yes until 76.
We had local assembly on Beetles, Kombis, Type 3, Country Buggy, Passat, Audi Fox, Golf.

Can’t remember K-G, I think they may have been full import.
