That is a good take on it. I have long been a fan of the original.but I really like his version of this.......Takes it away from being horseback ridin' music rather nicely.
More broadly, there are singers from the 80s and 90s that were good back then, but haven't taken care of their voices (maybe they didn't expect to live this long?). In the studio, where they can take their time, spend days preparing, and do multiple takes, they can still sound good. But live, they just can't do it any more. James LaBrie (Dream Theater) clearly isn't what he used to be live, but in the studio still brings it.
There are exceptions. Paul Rodgers still sounds great. Robert Plant can still sing live. He doesn't hit all the high notes anymore; he saves them for where they are needed for impact. Similarly, Geddy took good care of his voice and likewise, needs so save the big notes for when they are needed.
