Thunderbird Club

Discovered a flaw in that plan, I have :(

...I forgot the screw & button are one-piece

But, making progress on my test-run for the other end! :)

Having played a Jazz for years and still owning several along with a few Thunderbirds I can honestly say IMHO that a Jazz neck pup soloed with the tone knob rolled off is indeed a deep and dark sound but I personally find it more nasal than my Thunderbirds. Most of mine have a much thicker tone (Humbuckers vs single coils) with more punch than my Jazz basses. I do think the Jazz is capable of sounding cleaner than my birds, which have a more saturated sound (again Humbuckers vs single coils).

In Fender terms, I'd generally put the Thunderbird in the P bass category. But understand that none of my 6 Thunderbirds sound exactly alike. My 2015 in dual coil mode far exceeds the lowest of lows of any Jazz I've played. The Greco delivers a massive gut punch exceeding any P bass I've played or owned. YMMV
Thank you.
I don't know how much neck-through matters, but I suspect that the laminations are essential.

Could any of you say, based on first hand experience, that a THUNDERBIRD usually has more solid lows than a Jazz bass? Any general statement?
Yes, generally. I have two Js and they have a very different lows than the Thunderbirds. I'm not good at describing tonal textures, but I would say the Thunderbird lows are thicker, and sound lower as well. The VPs don't seem to have the lows of my '64 or the '06--or the '64 Embassy for that matter. The modern Thunderbirds are the monsters of low! Due to the PUs and the neck PU placement.

Happy Monday Thunderbird loving sisters and brothers. Took a swing through my old home town on my way to pick up the better half over the weekend. Always interesting to see what has become of the home place, and a chance to visit a good friend that has run a record store there for decades. Picked up a few hours of music from Jerry and the boys. Looking forward to some hours of great listening pleasure.
Happy to report the flats on my bird just sound better and better. Waiting for all this to end so the band can get back together. Have a great day everyone.

Yes! A fellow Dead Head. Red Rocks is one of my favorites.

Thank you.
I don't know how much neck-through matters, but I suspect that the laminations are essential.
I've built a few basses but I'm no Luthier by a long shot. That said, when playing a bass in a mix I just don't really notice any difference between neck through, set neck or bolt on. When noodling around in the practice room I think I feel a bit more sustain and maybe a slightly different attack and decay with my neck through birds vs my set or bolt birds, but it's very subtle and could just as easily be confirmation bias.

The multi ply mahogany and walnut neck laminations probably do effect the tone to a degree but I suspect it's designed that way more for stability than anything else. I'd assume a single piece non ply neck as thin as some of my birds have would twist like a noodle with humidity, temperature and string tension changes.

I am a member of the Wood Matters club and do think that wood type and density and construction methods all effect the overall tone or character of the bass - how much and how predictable are the real questions. In my opinion the strings/controls/amp/cab chain deliver a sound, the wood and construction methods determine the character of that sound, and the playing style gives expression and emotion to that sound. JMHO, there's many other opinions out there as well.

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

They are touching? Can that happen?..... Oh, I get it. The pic of you is where you are staring at them in utter disbelief.......:D

How did the gig go with the BBs?
went well! thx...the stock bridge pup on the 13 NR continues to be a PITA as the bottom screw (controls side) slowly comes undone (forgot about this since the bass sported three screw 70's winders for a while) and starts rub on the G string (I know ahem) making it useless...then I remember and screw it down and all good until next time....don't wanna super glue it down a' la Fred Flintstone soo trying to figure out how to fix it....no spring? different screw? dunno..
as for the sound, pretty much any tone (except aggressive slap/synth) available from the EQ and beautiful evenness when played with Dunlop nylon 60 and 73s. used my Promethean P500H into a MB 2X12 which never went past 2...all in all pretty good but could have really used a second bass (which I brought but left in the car ) with steel rounds for some of the more synthy 80's stuff, thing is, with yesterday's BL we go from a pool of great Bay Area players but you never know who's showing up to play so....

Take a walk on the Wildside! The Thunderbird Club welcomes you!

Well, we ran a bit over 1000 posts in pt.7, we'd better get it going here!

Welcome Walmark, #431 with a beautiful '66 Non Reverse II!

Gotta get this in here too! Jaibeau's new Lull Non Reverse 5er, now 15% bigger!

View attachment 2242660
Ooh nice don’t see many of those non reversible it’s called ain’t it confusing as that came 2nd to reversible you’d think it’d be the other way around all the same shame they don’t do any more rereleased versions in 6 string to well exact replicas like the 60s with custom colours been in standard that’s why I like fender they’re great instruments that you can get custom colours that won’t cost upwards of £2500^

You and the NR I recognize, but who are the other two cuties?
People are happy to get out, but some are probably happy to be able to support musicians, too.
yeah definitely...people kept their distance, actually doable if the venue is large enough..to answer your question the short cutie is this gal (Darby)..

the big ugly "cutie" is this guy (John)..

upwards of 2500 for Non-Reverses?....nah...

Have you tried removing the offending screw, inserting a toothpick in the screw hole and snapping off the excess, then reinserting the screw? Probably no glue needed.

Does anyone remember this? I've had a lot going on since I posted this beast two and half years ago, family stuff that meant I couldn't justify fiddling around with this project. Anyway, this is what it looks like after being able to spend some of the summer of lockdown starting to tidy up the messed up bits of it in preparation for painting it.

That started out the heavy dark burst?

I have two Gibsons. My ‘15 is the best bass I’ve ever played. Pre-Covid, I went to a lot of stores and played hundreds of basses. Nothing compares to it. My ‘13 NR is great, I’ll never part with it. But my ’15 is in a class all by itself. Absolute perfection. The standard reverse Gibson Thunderbird is one of the best basses ever made. Every player should own one.
I have a '15 and can say it is close. The Flamingo ('91) is close. But the '01 is the pixie dust bass. All are Gibsons. I have other bass guitars, but those are the ones that have the little extra.

What about the 2015 makes it the best?
From a playability and feel standpoint, it's a Gibson Thunderbird. From a sound standpoint, it has the amazing DiCola pickups and coil tapping. I put tapes on mine to see how that would work. Just fine, as it turns out. The pickup magnets could move a Volkswagen, so you have to lower the pickups instead of raising them. If you want overdrive, they will blow things up if you let them. Or you can get a much sweeter sound out of them. It's hard to explain all the tone colors that come out of that bass. I haven't found any strings that don't work on it, either.
