Thunderbird Club

I was on the fence about grabbing that black Orville from the classified, then wound up missing the sale by a few minutes. Oh well! Today I contacted a local selling an Epi custom shop limited edition ‘Bird in a really interesting color for really cheap. I contacted the guy and told him I’d be in his area on a bike ride. We set up a time and I contacted him when I was back in my car in his neighborhood. After about 30 minutes later with no response, I just went home. Over two hours later he contacted me to say he forgot I was coming over! I politely said it was pretty uncool to just leave someone sitting in their car waiting and said “good luck on the sale.” That’s two ‘Birds that got away this weekend :)

Missing meetings is terrible. But it happens sometimes and I try to be understanding, as I hope others are with me. Getting stuck in traffic, running long on something that you just can't escape etc.

"Forgot" is not acceptable. When I have something booked with someone I literally book it in my calendar so that I don't forget. If I am going to be late or miss, I make honest attempts to let the other party know as early as possible. I don't understand why others don't do that. "Forgot" just tells me that the other party has no respect for anyone else's time.

Exactly. I’m not upset about the bass. I just have an extra Lollar pu, bridge and tuners and thought it could be a fun project bass. It’s the fact that I scheduled myself to be in his neighborhood so he wouldn’t have to do anything but hand off the bass and collect some dough. And he was perfectly content to let me sit in my car indefinitely waiting on him to send me his address. I even sent my phone number. A bit beyond inconsiderate if you ask me
It's like being late for meeting or anything really. It's inconsiderate to say the least because it wastes other people's time. Time they can't get back. (There are exceptions beyond your control.) I still am lost on how you forget you are finally selling a bass you want to get rid of.....:rollno:

Beautiful collection!
The headstock on the second to the last bass on the right looks interesting, what bass is that?

That is my Nocturnal bass. Made from a Warmoth body and Carvin bolt on Jazz size that had a paddle headstock. I had it shaped like a batwing (To my eyes at least) and used the Gotoh tuners because they remind me of batwings to a certain degree. I don't have any great shots of it that I can find right now but this gives you more detail.

Hey @GBassNorth and @D.M.N. Was doing my leisurely looking around and came across this in Chatsworth, local pickup only. I’m not interested, but if one of you guys are looking for a project (or want a PJ), this could be fun...

That is a great price for one of the rarer finishes. The sunburst seems to be the version that turns up 90% of the time.

FWIW, when I bought the blue model (later sold it to a friend) the seller had bought it to install Thunderbuckers in but his wife got pregnant so he was selling off a lot of gear. You can always get rid of the P-J if you wanted to.

I thought so. You’re the expert on these. My plate is full of wishes and wants of other things at the moment or I’d pick it up. It would be cool for one of us to get it. It would take you what, about 7 hours one way to pick it up?

How are the PUPs? I’ve thought if I ever picked one up and didn’t like them, I’d try a set of Wilde’s in it first before resorting to more invasive surgery to put in either one or two Thunderbuckers.

I don't know if I am an expert on anything, but I have owned 5 of these over time (2 remain). The stock pickups are okay. Probably typical P-J pickups that work fine stock, but they are nothing "special". In the refinished white one I have a Dimarzio P pickup and stock J. I dial in a little of the J pickup but lean towards the P. I haven't changed the pickups in the green model yet. It sounds good as is and you wouldn't need to change anything, but I like to try different pickups so I am likely to change things up a bit. They are well made basses but I know the 7ender setup (P-J, Alder body, Maple neck) turns some people off. I originally bought one because I wanted the 7ender sound without the look.

Can't remember if I've asked this, but since the headstock is reversed, do you notice any significant difference in string tension with the E going so much further after the nut?

It does seem to have more tension, but not like a crazy difference. It could be my imagination as well because I know there is a difference in length from all of my other basses. I have thought about tuning it BEAD because it does seem to have enough tension to remove some of the floppy feel some 5ers have. I always think about converting the white one to BEAD, but not sure how much I would actually use that tuning.
