Thunderbird Club

Tonight was Cuban style black beans and shredded chicken with cilantro lime adobo seasoning, in the crock pot for about 3 1/2 hours while playing my THUNDERBIRD, then poured over yellow rice. Tasty. And a diet Mountain Dew.
You had me till the diet Mountain Dew. I love Cuban food. Well, a great deal of it. Never took to Yuca as they do, however.

If I’m not having beer or wine, I’d much rather drink water than any pop - or soda as you call it.
My 'bitter half' is from Milwaukee. When she was growing up, everything was a 'coke'. Like at a restaurant: "I'll have a coke". "What kind?" "Oh,(pause)7-UP." Weird.

You are a Renaissance Man. I love this place.

How gauche. Diet Pepsi? The monster might as well have opened with a Tab! (Shuudders)
I was first made aware of this piece by my wife, who saw Bill Murray read it at a benefit dinner. She said it was one of the funniest things she ever saw. The entire place was in tears.

My wife classifies all of those as “cool drink” which is different to water and to squash/cordial. It used to really confuse me in the early days when I’d say “Can I get you anything from the kitchen?” and she’d reply “a cool drink with ice”. What kind of strange roulette am I playing in the fridge here?

Interesting. That’s much more a southern thing. In college, it was everyone from the north or midwest giving those from the south a hard time over that.

I posted this on my FB yesterday, my fave piece by Robert Plant. The song and video fit together very well, love imagery (the Cotton Belt locomotive towards the end doesn't hurt!), feels hot, anybody else besides me?

Always liked that song. Cool video. Doesn’t inspire me to visit the place though...pretty much middle of freaking nowhere desert town. I prefer to drive through it without stopping.

Interesting, I'd actually like to see that, deserts are interesting places. I visited central Utah to take pictures of trains back in 1981 during the summer, it was hot as hell, I waited 45 minutes for the Rio Grande Zephyr to show up lucky we had plenty of water - that part of the country is like the surface of the moon.

I'm with you. Coke (of any kind) with any meal other than a hamburger or hotdog just ain't right. Wine, mixed drink, beer or water for me.

Born in SF lived mostly in SoCal, NorCal and Colorado growing up. We always called every soft drink a "Coke". Not sure where I picked that up, but my dad was from the Southern tip of Illinois so that might be the cause.

LOL - my first wife was from the Cincinnati area, we met in San Jose and started dating there. The first time I brought her home to meet my parents I asked her if she wanted a glass of milk with dinner. Her response was "Please". So I poured her a glass of milk. As I placed it in front of her she looked at me and said, "I don't want any milk thanks". Mom, dad and I all looked puzzled at each other. I barely knew her, but now I was wondering if she had some kind of multiple personality disorder.

Turns out there's a very small swath of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati that uses the response "Please" if they didn't clearly hear the question. Its short for saying "could you please repeat that".

Of course my response to her refusal of the milk was, "would you like a Coke". Again, she said, "Please". So I asked her what kind. She looked at me like I was crazy and in a frustrated voice she said "Coke". So I got her a Pepsi and set it on the table. She promptly said, "I don't want that". By now I was just about certain she was schizophrenic. So I didn't ask any more questions and just gave her a glass of water.

Fast forward about five years later when we divorced. Turns out she was in fact diagnosed as a schizophrenic manic depressive. Although that had nothing to do with our Communication Breakdown at the dinner table. Real roller coaster of a marriage!

Love that tune. Plant put out a few great songs after LZ.

My favorite work from Plant since LZ is with Allison Krause. That is some cool stuff. The live concert that's on occasionally where they discuss the project is great. His other post LZ work never held my attention. But I find their collaboration result very clever and interesting.

You drive through it on the way to Joshua Tree which is kind of interesting to drive through. There’s the “monument” U2 fans made and visit as well. I’m not a desert rat.
