Thunderbird Club

I have an 'el cheapo' phaser that works well for the jazz gig but not so well for the rock gigs. Also kinda depends on which bass I use. And seems to not 'play well' with the POG for some reason, so one or t'other.

You steered me right on the POG, so maybe I'll start looking at the better Phasers.

At first I thought it was Greg Reeves. But looking at my fifty year old album insert:

I would have guessed that the first album might have Bruce Palmer, since I know Ahmet Ertegun's plan was for "Buffalo Springfield v2.0"

time to clone the Ashdown.......:D
I agree. Let me know when you're finished Chuck. Check will be in the mail!

I've really got to be on the lookout for local ashdown head. I got the other one as partial payment on a trade for an SWR 350 or an Ampeg Pro 3. Kind of wish I had the SWR back as well. Never sounded great with the cabs I had at the time. Really glassy. But think they would with what I have now. The Ashdown may have been the warmest SS amps I ever played.

It’s really hard to hear a chorus on bass in a live setting while the rest of the band is playing - unless you have a fair bit of high end in your signal.
I’ve mostly used it for the downward run in “These Boots are made for Walking” and Sledgehammer where I combined it with octave up/down.
My pedals are fairly pedestrian - Chorus is the Boss CEB-3.

If you add distortion, I’ve found you want something that will retain your original signal and allow you to blend in the distorted signal. You don’t want the bottom to drop out when you hit the switch. I use a regular Big Muff Pi. (Not much cool factor:laugh:)
I'm glad that you found similar experiences. I didn't know if it was just me or what.

I'll ask the group here, I'm in a 3 piece Hard Rock band, and the lead player has asked me to fill in more on some of the leads (8-9). Our favorite Floridan recommended a POG, which I'm using on 5-6 (3 different settings). I would like to add some chorus or flanger as well, both to the POG and separately. The use of effects is new to me.

Do Thunderbirds respond better to one or the other? Looking at EH Electric Mistress, BF-3, MXR Chorus Deluxe and the like.

I played in a similar situation for years. I always blended in a little grit and often added chorus or phaser. I like the TC Corona chorus because of all the tone prints. It really let my find the exact chorus sound I wanted. My phaser go to in the past was an MXR phase 90. Now I use the tiny Mooer copy and a Nano Batallion for grit.

The Bakersfield sound. Originally from Santa Cruz, Cracker (Dave Lowry & co) keeps that ball rolling these days.

I saw Cracker and Counting Crows in Hollywood at the beginning of their careers, and last saw Cracker right before the world stopped in early 2020. And MANY times in-between. The Bakersfield "side" of their Berkeley to Bakersfield album gets a LOT of airtime at my house, along with Johnny Hickman's solo and side projects (and old Camper albums as well).

I'd second JIO on this. And although I've never attempted case repair in the past I'd guess that if any adhesive is used it should be low or non VOC type to keep off gassing from effecting the finish on the bass. That and an extended open air exposure in the warm sun to speed up any off gassing the fabric, foam or glue might want to do.

Good advice - I've built a couple of cases over the years, this one more recently for my Custom Kraft. Finding a HSC that it would fit just isn't possible, in fact I've never even seen the original HSC for one. This pic was taken before I installed two locking clasps. It's a bit heavy but will protect the hollow-body.

Instead of using spray adhesive, (if careful - it can be messy) a hot-glue gun can get the job done and it's pretty low toxic.

Indeed. How far back does the Bakersfield sound go? I know Leo F really liked C&W, but I don't think that's really the same thing.

It's C&W, just a variety of it - a specific slant that Buck Owens and others from that area were known for. Like "West Coast Jazz" - it's Jazz with a specific flavor unlike NYC/East Coast Jazz.

That looks great! There was a whole bunch of blue fur that hadn’t been glued down in the case I want to redo. It’ll be hot glue gun adventure!

The trick is to cut thin cardboard into the shape you want, add a layer of thin foam (sheet) the same shape, and wrap the material around to the back gluing the underside of the wrapped material to the cardboard. Then, you hot-glue the cardboard to the case. The sides are separate pieces dealt with the same way - base goes down first, edges after.

Thanks. Very interesting. I don't care for typical C&W at all. Some traditional to modern country I can listen to, but I do like most Bluegrass (as long as it doesn't get into caterwauling). Weird, I know.

NBD!
Alpine White Epi VP delivered today!
Needs a full setup (A string sounds a bit wonky), to get it sounding as good as my ebony and ‘burst VP’s, but happy to have her...

Looks great! Congrats! Maybe try some flats on it for something different. Cobalts do sound good, but as first vice president of the Princess Fingers club, they are a no go for me. Roto flats do sound good, as do Roto NPS.

I think any style of music can be thought of as "typical" by anyone as each style follows an accepted structured format. For me, I'll pick "metal". Metal comes in many shades and colours... and from many decades at this point. It's definitely not my favorite music to listen to, but I like many songs that are considered metal, and like when bands/artists I like/follow drift into metal for hybridization. I'm guessing SunnO))) is some version of metal.
