Thunderbird Club

I have found phaser and chorus to reasonably subtle until some drive is applied. Even then, I wasn't that happy with results. For phaser chorus etc. I seem to get the best results with this.

I was going to send my old Ross flanger to AnalogMan to see if it could be salvaged, but when I checked, he wasn't taking on such work. Anyone have any recommendations? (@Chucky Stiletti , you up for it?) I used to have a set of Ross schematics, but haven't seen them since we moved into this house (a good while back).

It quit working after a direct lightning strike at the last house.

I haven't used the Whirlwind, but I do have the MXR '74 Script Phase 90, and while it's a cool pedal, it does strike me as pretty subtle. I may need to go back and try it again, as I haven't used it in a while, but I felt I wanted a bigger sound to it. I got it because I wanted the Pigs (Three Different Ones) sound, and it does that, it's just that it seems like a rather small sound. I might need a normal Block one, as those seem to be a bit more in your face, and while I think the Script works well on guitar, on bass it might just not be enough.

I DO want to try the Whirlwind though.

The phaser I'm currently on the hunt for is the Maxon Rotary Phaser PH-350, but damn are they hard to come by.
Try the Whirlwind for sure before you settle on one.

The old pre '84 Block and the '74 should sound just about the same. But during those years some components varied and even changed, both being 4 stage. The Dunlop Block 90s may sound different, the current 90s do sound different and not as expressive IMO. The Whirlwind seems to capture the old (real) 90s well from what I can tell from online samples. But the 90 just may not do what you're seeking, so something else my just be in order. Might look into the TCE Helix. Really flexible without dropping some serious bucks.

How badly do you want a Maxon?!!!

As an absolute amateur:
Lightning strike - quite possibly something simple like the power supply section having a component burned. Could be an easy fix.
Schematics for old pedals are nearly as ubiquitous on the internet as watermelon pictures...

These can be had very cheap.

4 stage phaser, all analog, much like the old MXRs. I think these were discontinued (along with the rest of the line) and sold off quite inexpensively and are still available cheap.

Pretty badly. Maybe not $330 badly though...

I looked at that those initially. But some of the comps on youboob moved me in another direction, originally to the MXR 95. I likely has the vintage phaser that is one of the settings in the Helix.
