o_O I have no clue what you're talking about. Furthermore if it's in French I wouldn't even be able to read it.

Reading isn't the reason for said magazine but you already now this.

If there were to be any truth in your statement, and I'm not saying there is, I would have the decency to not admit to such a thing here.

Please explain your apparent familiarity with sleeved reading material. :roflmao:

As a wee lad, an innocent and sweet child just looking to buy a Slurpee(ahem), I'd see a rack of these sleeved magazines at the local 7-11 and wonder if they had these same racks of sleeved magazines in Kentucky... o_O

I now have my answer.

No, we had to drive to Michigan. I mean, no we didn't. I mean I didn't. But I've heard some people did that.

Very nice one, Your Grace. ¸
I'm a sucker for Birds with 2-toned headstock, especially the cream ones with a dark TR cover. Lord knows why...

As has been discussed here, I'm more of a phaser guy. Just seems to do more and add something subtle to notes for my purposes. But all phasers don't work for me either. I just sold a Boss Bass Chorus a month ago. Loved how it sounded alone, but live is just didn't do anything noticeable for me. Could very well have been user incompetence! Had it for years but just stopped using it and my old 1982 Phase 90 just keeps impressing and fitting what I want.

Yup, seen the talk and pics of your board. I love phaser as well, just don't have any use for it in the current projects. Haven't seen too many bass-dedicated phasers around tho ? For years, I thought the effect on Phil Chen's opening lines on Rod Stewart's Passion was a phaser, until the man hisself confirmed it was an old Boss Stereo Chorus. I really loved the swirling phase-ish effect on that one.

I am a proponent of the first ten amendments to the US constitution (and have a particular fondness for #3) and so I thought that as a Kentuckian you would know that the US supreme court made landmark first amendment decisions based on the petitions of one of your fellow Kentuckians.

I’d forgotten all about that song. Great chorus bass tone, for sure. I never wanted s chorus for bass before, but hmmm. And Chen is all over that neck! Vampire fingers.

Yeah, there is that. Few knew Larry and nobody liked him from what I could tell. He was originally from the far Eastern part of the state. Likely had to leave before being harmed.

In my 'hood, when someone mentions chorus on bass, you usually hear Duff McKagan's name not long after. I like his use of chorus. But Passion stands out a bit. Tried a more recent Stereo chorus, not getting close to Mr. Chen's sound. Of course, his is the old analog non bass-dedicated one.

$hit, have to go back at work...

Got one of those this summer, just for kicks. After tweaking it quite a bit, finally had it sounding just right for me. It's old techno, but I think it sounds better than my Zoom BN3. The modulation section is meh (at least on my unit), but I could find some good sounds in the other sections and I really liked the wah. I also have a thing for analog and recently got Tech21's new Bass Fly rig v2. Has everything I need and sounds real good through the headphones, can't wait to give it a run with the band.

I got a used ME50b this past summer as well. I have had one before and I swore this time I would put some time into learning how to tweak it into a possible back up gig pedal. I like lots of the tones from it and it's handy to have it all in one box. I also have the first version of the fly rig and absolutely love it! It's everything I need and more. It was nice to get rid of the pedalboard and just have the fly rig. I like all the effects it offers.....even the chorus! It seems we have similar taste so I will go on a limb and say that you'll like the fly rig. It's worth it just for the sansamp!

Indeed. Can't say I'm a big Boss effect fan (I use their utility pedals), but I have a soft spot for that old multi. As for Tech21... I'm a big fan and have been for a long time. So when they came out with a pedal offering both VT and BDDI sounds in 2 channels, that in itself justified the purchase. Took me awhile to get it right though. Chorus works fine for me and the filter section is set to sound like a wah (like what I get from a Digitech BSW), which it does pretty well. Not using the fuzz at all and the octave effect will come from the MXR BOD, sitting in the fx loop (another great feature). The only real thing missing (IMO) is a blend for the SansAmp section, but I get that to get all those goodies in a compact format, compromises have to be made.

The Bird sounds absolutely massive through it.

I'm don't know enough to know. Something changed after MXR was bought by Dunlop in '84, that's why the true MXRs are more desirable...at least by those who've had one and notice the difference. Other phasers do some cool stuff, but they don't sound the same and lack some of that old magic. I've got a TC Helix which is crazy adjustable, but it won't sound like an old phase 90--and I've tried. Cool phaser with many stage phasing, but..... Even the new Phase 95 which has the 90 and 45 (2 stage setting) didn't sound like the old 90--was a great phaser but lacked something. I used the 95 and kept thinking, where's my sound I'm used to hearing. Just wasn't there. Seemed to lack sparkle and depth.

The MXR kind of set the standard, though others were around. Van Halen and other songs that used a phaser were most often the 90 (a 4 stage phaser, small stones are two stage if I recall correctly). The early scrip versions were 2 stage as well, but were really subtle. I'm not much into effects, but that pedal I love. The only thing I don't like is there is a slight volume boost, which is common. With the Helix you can adjust that with some phaser sounds.

The "new" phaser that seems to sound like the old 90 is the Whirlwind "Orange Box" which is run by Scott's bro-in-law and was with MXR at the beginning, so he ought to know the secret sauce.

I haven't been able to try the Whirlwind, but from Youboob it seems to be the closest--and may sound exactly like it. Hard to tell as some nuance is lost. There are a number of comparison vids, some more helpful than others. But the way people record, etc. it's not always possible to tell. It's the live setting that really shows the difference. I liked the sound(s) of the 95, though I could tell there was something different. But live something disappeared or was not as prominent. The old 90 seemed bigger for one thing and more pronounced, but without getting weird or goofy sounding. My 90 is set about 10:00 and is plenty interesting and pleasant at that point for my purposes.

My concern about the Whirlwind was: It seemed to sound good, and Ken confirmed that it did (and Scott), but did it sound like the old 90. Whirlwind says it does, but MXR says that about their 90 and 95 as well. I was also not wanting to get much over the $100 range if possible. I went with the TCE Helix because it was amazingly adjustable and editable via the app for further tweaking. If figured if anything could get close, that might be it. And I was into Sweetwater for the 95, and they had a demo of the Helix. The demo got lost and my guy sent me a new one at the demo price and expedited it so I got it the next day to use on Sunday. I'm working with the Helix now that the 90 is alive to see if I can get it to sound the same. So far, close, but not the same. At least not so far. I'm likely keeping the Helix as a backup. May use it as a different flavor phaser or more subtle chorus type thing. Hope that helps, but didn't bore to to sleep.

If I ever find a used Whirlwind, I'll likely buy it.

I haven't used the Whirlwind, but I do have the MXR '74 Script Phase 90, and while it's a cool pedal, it does strike me as pretty subtle. I may need to go back and try it again, as I haven't used it in a while, but I felt I wanted a bigger sound to it. I got it because I wanted the Pigs (Three Different Ones) sound, and it does that, it's just that it seems like a rather small sound. I might need a normal Block one, as those seem to be a bit more in your face, and while I think the Script works well on guitar, on bass it might just not be enough.

I DO want to try the Whirlwind though.

The phaser I'm currently on the hunt for is the Maxon Rotary Phaser PH-350, but damn are they hard to come by.

playing around with this thing now….not convinced yet….although more of a hassle, give me analog any day…

I'm just starting to build out a pedal board, only analog pedals at this point! Wah, Univibe, Fuzz, Distortion, Tremolo, Amp-in-a-box Overdrive. Might add in a chorus and chain in the Surfybear reverb at some point too.
