I have a reverse with the button at the heel, I would think that Gibson put it the way it is for a reason. Most Gibson are at the heel, I have an EB4-L here and when I sit down playing it the strap has passed over the front of the body a few times and it does support the neck better but I use big wide 3" and 4" straps to prevent neck dive.
most of my Gibson treble geetars work best at the heel. (SG’s, Firebirds, V’s)
I’m just going to do it, I’m adding a tailpiece claw anyway so I’m not scared of drilling a couple holes in my new bass.
I tried straps a couple times over 2” and they bug the crap out of me, they feel like they are riding up over my ear.
I do wear my instruments so they sit the same height seated as standing.
I also rotate so my fretting/fretless hand stays parallel to the board.
