Thunderbird Club

I think I figured out what I did wrong.

I quickly did these with the TCE Helix which I tried to match my Phase 90 (which sounds better), which I didn't bring home after use. May be of not interest, but maybe will help explain a little about why I love my phaser.

Nothing fancy at all. Just quick run through of samples without and with the Helix. Ignore the playing and the sting noise. My ipad is at my feet and closer to me than the the amp and cab (Ampeg V4BH and Fender 115). Using the '06 Thunderbird with SIT Power Steels. Fingers except the last sample which is with pick. The third one is just noodling.
Not the best examples of a phaser or low tech recording, but it is what it is.

Hmm. Last one wouldn't play. I may hafta dig out-and rebattery-my P.O.S. phaser. Just for S&G, ya know. Does add some, IDK, depth(?).

Oh, and you ain’t even seen what finish is goin on the body.

I had to do a complete paradigm change on the finish because of a bone head assumption I made (ended up costing me a bunch). The original plan was to match my blonde tiger stripe maple SG, which I could easily do myself at very little cost.

Unfortunately the “Fender sized” neck that I had originally purchased for the bass was a less than perfect fit in the pocket. I thought I could make it work without too much hassle so I drilled all the pilot holes for the bridge and hard tail with the neck in place. Then along came a Fender neck at a price I couldn’t refuse. Installed the Fender neck and much to my surprise, it was 3/4” closer to the bridge. That meant there were now six pilot holes in the wrong spots and there’s no way you can hide those on a blonde finish. I needed to go dark to have any hope of masking the holes.

So she’s now going to be a tiger eye burst. Still plenty gaudy though it should work great with the gold trim and will be a bit closer to a traditional Tbird tobacco burst in color.
Sounds very tasty!

Oh, Oh, I wasn't sure what those were called. I could actually use one of those on my EB4-L with the tilt-o-matic bridge. Do they sell those separately? I see the '63-'69 T-Bird set on ebay but would only need to claw to get my strings back a little.

if the string spacing works, Hipshot sells a tailpiece with or without their D style bridge. A bit pricy, but it’s there and undoubtedly well made. Surely they aren’t alone.

Within your recording parameters, it sounds like that phaser does a good job.

My 'Thunderbird Thursday' was the early AM delivery of my 'newly aquired '70 (Czech) Jolana Kolorbas. (with metallic art treatment) Took two months to arrive from Russian Federation Czechoslovakia.

Odd. Seems to work for me.

Give it a try sometime. It's not for every song by any means, but does add a little something interesting at times other than just a note ringing out. Slow floaty type songs seem well suited for a little phaser in my experience. I think the trick is subtle--not an outer space kind of sound. Anything about about half way in unusable for typical bass unless you are going for the "out there" sound for the hippy dippy weather man sound.

I know it's a running joke with it being the most requested rock song ever, but I can sure think of an almost endless list of songs I would rather not hear other than Freebird.

Some folks hate on Skynyrd because they were/are good ol' boys. I'll tell you what... I'd rather hang with some good ol' boys any day of the week than snooty uptight types.

And last night, I did just that driving over an hour each way to hangout with the fine members of Pröwess from NC. They're in town for 3 nights of shows and tonight I'll be rocking and hanging with them after their set at The World Famous Machine Shop. Just a 20 minute drive tonight. :)

These are my people!
