I remember being quite shocked when I watched Magma's 1981 Bobino concert from a VHS for the first time. I loved their 1975 double live album and this "space soul" phase was a bit different to say the least.

Magma was early theatrical prog-rock similar in some ways to Genesis, but from France. Christian Vander was a talented "super-percussionist" (in the mold of contemporaries Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Ronald Shannon-Jackson and a couple others) - they did their Magma thing 100%. Their place in music history can't be denied.

Other prog rock bands made concept albums, Magma was a concept band. They indeed created a whole genre (zeuhl) and had various off-shoots like the excellent Weidorje or solo albums by Patrick Gauthier and Jean-Philippe Goude. The growling bass sound was created by Jannick Top who tuned his bass like a cello (but octave lower). If Magma's heavy and repetitious sidelong tracks get a bit too heavy I can heartily recommend especially "Drones" (1980) by Jean-Phillippe Goude. It's got zeuhl but also more fusion or even ECM-esque stuff.

BTW, Vander's hero is John Coltrane and Elvin Jones gave him some lessons when he was a kid. I saw Magma in Helsinki in 2017 and it was a superb performance.

I clearly need to expand my music library. I didn’t recognize one single name you mentioned, and I’m a prog rock lover.:wideyed:
