Time to leave ?

for a little over 2 years now I have been playing in a top 40 coverband , this is the first working band I have ever been in , however I feel I am losing my patience with how the band is being managed. In the beginning the BL and I worked more like partners, Working out the details from sound , promo , and so on , we talked with the notion that we ( the band ) was going to be a democracy, but now things have turned more into a dictatorship ( when it's convenient for the BL ) at this point my " responsibilities " are to pick up th PA at the BL house , arrive at the club usually an hour or so before show time ( which I have to call the club because the BL never knows when we are suppose to go on ) I unload most of the PA before anyone eles shows up, however the guitarist does help . I set up the PA , run the sound. The BL who is the drummer usually shows up last and takes a long time to set up because , he has to talk to everyone in the club!. The singer who belives she is the best singer in our state! Her words ! Will order something to eat while we are setting up ! When I complain about this behavior, the BL tells me that this is how it is with all singers in every band!! I say ******** !!
How much we get paid for a show is never disclosed , I have to ask , we should know what we're are getting paid ! , the thing is that in the beginning it was always disclosed and we always got paid at the end of the night , things change and it has to do with argent fees and taxes. Some clubs now have the BL fill out a tax form and pay with a check , with the BL withholds 20% for taxes , because this is his tax bracket, I would prefer to get I9 at the end of the year but I look at like the extra he does get is for booking the shows. I have always told him to take 10% for booking , but he refuses he would rather soak us in other stupid ways! Like spending money on websites and other stupid poopie , then he'll send out a text saying oh guys I spent $800 on expenses how do you want to pay me back ! You owe me $200 each you want me to deduct of from this weekends gigs ?
Now I don't have a problem paying for expenses but I feel we should be told beforehand how much is going to be spent and on what and we should all agree on it .
The BL has let the singer cancel and turn down shows because " she " don't want to do them ! He created a monster with this singer ! I have been playing music for over 25 plus years and have dellt with a lot of personalities but this is 2 much for me !

Sounds like you are being taken advantage of and I would be frustrated too.
You are being treated like a sideman and not a band member. That's okay but the rules are different.
You shouldn't have to pay band expenses. The BL should decide how much you should be paid for each gig after he covers what he feels the expenses are and be able to tell you what you will earn.
I would tell the BL that I am changing my status to sideman and will play any gigs on a case by case basis.
What I would do then is ask every time that I get called for a gig, "How much will I make after expenses?" Then decide if it works for me or not.
I would start looking for a new group.

A democracy can work, but there has to be constant communication and everyone has to be 100% involved in 100% of the decisions.

In many ways, a "dictatorship" is the better way to go because too many opinions can never decide on anything. However, in this set up, the "dictator" needs to make it clear to all other members how it's going to be. The other members can decide from that if they want to stay or go.

The common thread is communication, whether it's up front or ongoing. Everyone needs to know how it is, in no uncertain terms. Maybe, Doley, y'all can get it back. If not, I would bolt. Unless of course, this is your only source of income. That always has a major effect on the decision making process.

Why do you have to go and pick up the PA from his house? Why can't he just bring it himself?
Why are you the only one at the venue on time? An hour before showtime is pretty standard.
Why is the singer not helping load in/out?
Why do you not know what gigs are paying when they are booked?
Why do you not know what time the gigs are booked for?
Why do not know about upcoming expenses?

Sounds like you need to have a band meeting.

Either the game is worth the candle ... or it isn't. Only YOU can decide. Here's my take FWIW ...
  • I know what I'll be paid BEFORE I agree to a gig. Always.
  • I don't haul other people's gear ... the guy who owns the PA hauls it and sets it up ... and gets a small cut for the effort
  • I set up my gear ... and only my gear.
  • I don't pay for anything I haven't agree to pay for ... period
  • I'd have a heart-to-heart with the BL tonight
  • I'd be looking for a new band (but wouldn't burn my bridges before I found one)

You're correct in that you're being taken advantage of. Been there, done that still have the t-shirt.

You got stuck doing all the "dirty" work and because you continue to without protest no one else helps because well it'll get done anyway because Doley's such a good guy. Also the BL has misled you into believing you're a partner instead of his pack-mule.

Liam's got it right let the BL know that you're just gonna play and anything above that IE picking up and setting up the PA, running sound, being the "band mom" will be an extra fee. If he's that smart he can figure it out. If not then he can hold auditions for your replacement and hope the next guy will agree to such a one-sided arrangement.

Time for a band sitdown, and either come to an agreement, or leave. Different bands have different rules, but as long as people agree to them, it works. Our guitarist supplies the PA, and does a lot of the booking, but does not want to take more for it. So I make sure that I do more than my share of schlepping the PA in and out of his truck, and at least buy the guy a drink. RustyAxe has been doing this even longer than I, and he has his rules.

If BL is not willing to be reasonable and consistent with the rules, you walk IMO. But start looking ASAP.

In our band, we KNOW what each gig pays. Each member is responsible for their tabs. We show up 2hrs. before gig, drummer sets up, then bass/guitar. Whoever`s PA is brought to gig by its owner. We ALL unpack,set-up, & tear down. We always assist each other, period! Whoever booked the gig receives pay after we`re all packed up. After $$$ is split, odd amounts always go to guy w/PA. This has worked well for us for well over 20 years now.
You SHOULD know what the band will gross prior to the gig & all hands should help. In a prior version of our band, we had a front-man that showed up 30m before gig, plugged in a wireless mic, sound checked, and his work was done. After being informed of how we operate, and his failure to conform after 2 gigs, he was fired.
A band is a business & must be handled like one. Bands get paid to set-up & tear down. The rest is for fun.

Wait....WHAT? If he spent $800 on whatever, that's on him! I'm not playing for free! And he has YOU moving, setting up and running the PA? He must be crazy! As for the singer.....who is actually running the band??? Personally, I'd be having a serious sit down with this cat. If no resolve then I'd be out! I was actually forced out of a band that started as a democratic entity and then to a dictatorship. We became at odds over some of his practices and ultimately I was let go. If you don't feel good about the way he's running things, do yourself a favor and bounce!

I concur with all the others. You have two choices here if you decide to stay: you can either tell him you need to know in advance what the gig pays (with the right of refusal if the pay is too low) or you can agree upon a fee that stays the same, regardless of what the BL gets paid for the gig.

For the latter arrangement, you can work up a sliding scale, ie: for this type of gig I get paid X amount and for this other type of gig I get paid Y amount. Base the fee upon the amount of gear you need to bring and the amount of time you'll be playing.

In either case, you should work out a separate fee for hauling/setting up/running the PA. The BL is taking advantage of you, as the others have said, and he's acting as if you're a sideman, but he's not treating you like a sideman. Sidemen get paid for their work. Time to start billing him accordingly.

It doesn't have to be a confrontation or a fight, either. It can simply be a conversation where you explain that you're not comfortable with the current arrangement and you'd like to re-define the business agreement. If he doesn't want to hear it, simply offer to fill in until he finds a replacement. No need for drama. Just a business agreement. All bridges remain intact and you either end up getting treated fairly or getting out.

There comes a point when playing in bands where it goes from being a fun, casual thing, to being a full blown business. I've been in the " business " part of it all my band life, and have come to the conclusion that, a democracy sounds nice, but in reality, very rare. Someone has to make quick decisions for the band, someone always does more of the schlepping ( PA, etc ), someone needs to take care of the tax situation, booking situation, etc. And they all want to get paid extra for taking on those responsibilities, and someone needs to be in charge of keeping track of that ! Most of the time, picking the material to do has been the closest thing to a democracy in my experience, but the other stuff is a thankless job that never seems worth the extra compensation you may get, and that, in and of itself, is a constant source of agita, with everybody else in the band. If you don't want to get involved in any of the aforementioned instances, then it's just a matter of how much you are willing to put up with, or let go. Sounds like you are at the end of that road, and need to make a decision about whether or not the band is worth being in, considering all the aggravation you would have to put up with.
