TL-606 owners unite

So, I built a TL-606 per the EV plans and love it. I'm now starting a second cab but this time I'd like to eliminate the internal frame as I'll be using dado and rabbet joints. How much will this alter the tuning of the cab. Should I compensate by moving the baffle inwards. I'd like to maintain the external dimensions as they're to be used as a stacked pair.
Thanks for advice you might have.

Ray

I have had 2 pairs of TL's which I built (1st pair in '82) & as a cabinet maker I thought the internal framing was pretty redundant & primitive so I deleted it. Mine are constructed as you propose with rabbets & dados. The only 1X parts that I kept are the 5 pieces that form the port. (4 front to back, 1 across)

Mine always sounded great & are all still operational.

This is a prototype that we had made by Eminence. It is an exact clone of the EV15L

No, it isn't. The only way to clone an EVM is to use an exact duplicate of the frame and motor structure. The tooling required would cost literally tens of thousands of dollars, and patent infringement issues aside neither Eminence nor anyone else is going to go to that kind of expense for a short production run. In any event the frame and motor shown are pure Eminence. Without the EV motor it won't sound like an EV.

I've had two people mention that mine sounds a little scooped in the mids. is this typical?

Maybe...

To my ears, it's got a bit of a low mid bump, and it's really really bright, so the net result might be a "scooped" sound, but not in an over-the-top 80's metal way...

There are others (BFM) who can speak more about what the freq response actually is.

All those pretty little graphs on page 2 of the TL606 plans refer to its performance with a EVM15L.

How does the TL sound with just the B-15 head driving it and just the Bassman 100 driving it?

The EV-15L speaker in the TL cab is definitely brighter and more mid-heavy than the speaker in the B-15 cab. Playing with a pick, the attack is really defined. Still pushes plenty of low end, but if you crank the lows too much the speaker won't handle it and it starts getting "flubby.". I used to play an SVT through one of the old Mesa 2x15's with the same speakers (400 watts apiece), and I completely blew one of them playing with the SVT on 4 with the Ultra Lo switch engaged. So, you have to be careful with your lows.

I think the TL cab, with the 15L speaker, makes every amp sound better and more present in the mix.

The box was built around the EV15L, and they can still be had on eBay and CL for not too much money.

I've got some loaded with 3015s, and it's... different.

On paper, the 3015 is a superior speaker in every way. Mr. BFM loves this driver, and thinks it will do well in this box.

The EV has more "character" but it's not distributed well. (It's "on axis only" according to BFM.) The 3015 is way more accurate, but sounds very dull to my ears (compared to the EV.)

To oversimplify,

The 3015 makes it sound like a PA cab.

The EVM makes it sound like a "guitar" cab (for lack of a better description.)

I have a pair of 3015LFs on order right now for another build (fEARful 15subs) and I will totally drop one in a TL606 to see what it does before I install it in the fEAR sub.

So you don't recommend the 3015s? I am currently running two bagend s15s and have been toying with the idea of a pair of 3015 loaded tl606s to replace it. I was looking for a beefier bottom and a little flatter response. The bagend specs for the eminence in the s15 has a xmax of 1.8mm whereas the 3015 is 5.9mm - about triple.

Holy crap!

I just found this beast in the 'deep freeze' storage of our warehouse:

The surrounds are dry-rotted/cracked... anybody have thoughts/opinions on the DIY surround repair kits?

It uses two Link Removed drivers.

I'll see if the boss wants to dump it for cheap.

A friend of mine Ivan played with Scandal before he passed away ... He had cabs just like that made by TD Audio and powered with a Crown PSA2... Killer rig... man. i want 15s now.

I sold my E140 loaded TL606 yesterday! Hah. Cool cab but I have stuff that's more suited to my needs. Sounded great with a Rickenbacker.

You should have heard it with a different driver. I bought a TL606 loaded with an E140, didn't seem like a good fit. As in very little bass. The guy I bought it from owned it for many years, playing jazz at low volume in clubs & cafes. I don't think he knew what he was missing.

I replaced the E140 with an Eminence 3015 and the improvements were like night and day. The 3015 was way bigger, punchier, especially in the low end, really no comparison.

It's always a pleasure to revisit old EV and JBL datasheets. For a time, a golden age, honest referenced informative specs and Basscabland* almost intersected. Due to real smart painstaking people who knew what was what, and some decent finances, these companies really built a huge library and some product lines of Right Stuff.

Too bad their influence in the true R&D/specs measuring and publishing has not informed the world of bassists much in the intervening years, especially from companies whose sales should assure that measurement gear and skills are affordable enough to be use rather than just puffing up the lies.

* Basscabland: much like Hunter S Thompson's shallow trench when all is going relatively well

I built a pair of TL-606 boxes back in the mid 90's and still use them today. Originally had them loaded with E140s, painted flat black and coated with polyurethane. A few years ago I swapped the E140's for 3015's and refinished the boxes with bed liner. They sound great and are pretty easy to move around. I find I can get plenty of sound out of just one box in most of the places I play with my classic rock band.

Reading this thread, I'm tickled to find out that lots of other folks have gone down this same path!

I'm giving some serious thought to building another one out of 1/2" plywood with more internal braces to get the weight down.

Yeah, I picked the ones up in the classifieds (yes, for a steal). And the Little Bastard is for running balls-out for distorted sounds, and it'll still flap pants legs through those 3015s. I've A/Bed it with my RH450, and at 8ohms, the RH450 barely gets louder with the way I run the Bastard (seriously). Worst case scenario, the balanced DI on it comes off a winding of the output transformer, so all that nasty, nasty tone can be put wherever (which would be necessary for anyone wanting lots of clean volume out of it).

I just bought a Mesa Road Ready TL606. I've been looking at it for weeks and finally bit on it. It is loaded with an older Eminence Kilomax Pro15. BIG lowend. I really think it is the wrong speaker for this cabinet and I think I should replace it with a Kappalite 3015.

Has anyone else tried this thing with that Kilomax speaker? I use a GK 700RBII amplifier. What do you guys think?
