TL-606 owners unite

Got my TL-606 Yesterday. Loaded it with a NOS EVM-15L I found locally. It sounds great for guitar and has an awesome old school bass vibe.

Sorry about the crap in the background we are in the middle of a home renovation. Mine has feet on the bottom and on one side so I can lay it down and stack it later on.

I grabbed an unloaded TL-606 cab for $30 from a consignment shop several months back and loaded it with a 400 watt EVM-15L I picked up at the same shop for $50. It immediately became a staple of my band's recording sessions. I first paired it with a vintage silverface Fender Bassman 100 and a VT Bass. Near perfect. Since then, I've begun using it as an extension cab with an Ampeg B-15N, running the VT Bass in front. Sheer perfection with both my Precision and Jazz.

(that Traynor TS-50B sounds incredible through the TL-606 too)

My TL-606 has recently been incorporated into my live setup as well. Pushing it with the 100 watt power section of an 800RB paired with a VT Bass (the 300 watt section of the GK is driving an 8x10). It might be the closest thing to tonal heaven that I've ever experienced.

I had my first encounter with a TL606 yesterday at a local used music store, and I was quite impressed!

This was obviously a DIY, but was very well constructed. The rat fur covering was rather nasty and the baffle and ports needed a good vaccuuming, but it was sturdy. Looking in the ports revealed that it was stuffed with pink home insulation. The cab was loaded with some unknown JBL driver, and had metal cup handles on either side. I was surprised that it wasn't excessively heavy, and was fairly easy to transport.

Using a G-K head that was laying around, I was getting that "old school" sound that immediately put a smile on my face, and plenty of volume. I found that I needed to add a bit of treble for my taste and sometimes the low E got a bit hazy. I was surprised that this 15 sounded quick enough to handle slap. I can see where this can be a viable standalone cab, and I'm really tempted to add it to my setup!

I've had bad experiences trying to run JBLs in slot ported cabs like that. I think they were designed to have more resistance from the internal volume of the cab. More "air spring"? The EV 15" all seem to fit that cab like a glove. Gauss as well.

So, I built a TL-606 per the EV plans and love it. I'm now starting a second cab but this time I'd like to eliminate the internal frame as I'll be using dado and rabbet joints. How much will this alter the tuning of the cab. Should I compensate by moving the baffle inwards. I'd like to maintain the external dimensions as they're to be used as a stacked pair.
Thanks for advice you might have.

Ray

I wouldn't compensate any of the measurements, as any increase in internal volume should be a net gain. Of course, serious cabinet builders probably know more than I on this.

Any thought to bracing the sides, maybe the way Acme does? You know, placing cross braces to make the sides taut?

As an aside, has anyone dropped a Deltalite 2515 into a TL606 with success?

So what is the better speaker for this cab? I have read the the Kappalite 3015 and the 3015LF.
I want to use this cab with my Orange OCB 115

The box was built around the EV15L, and they can still be had on eBay and CL for not too much money.

I've got some loaded with 3015s, and it's... different.

On paper, the 3015 is a superior speaker in every way. Mr. BFM loves this driver, and thinks it will do well in this box.

The EV has more "character" but it's not distributed well. (It's "on axis only" according to BFM.) The 3015 is way more accurate, but sounds very dull to my ears (compared to the EV.)

To oversimplify,

The 3015 makes it sound like a PA cab.

The EVM makes it sound like a "guitar" cab (for lack of a better description.)

I have a pair of 3015LFs on order right now for another build (fEARful 15subs) and I will totally drop one in a TL606 to see what it does before I install it in the fEAR sub.

LOL.

I looked at those exact same speakers and almost bought them on more than one occasion.

Here's the thing... if you ever want to recone those particular eBay speakers, you'll have to go through that eBay seller (somehow) since they are a proprietary speaker.

Orange County Speaker will re-cone old-school 15Ls for $99 all day. Those recone kits are readily available.

You'll have to trust the seller that they sound like 15Ls... I'm sure Eminence did a bang up job, but real 15Ls pop up all the time. Often on CL since peeps don't wanna ship them.

If you don't punish your cabs like I do, then those eBay eminence clones might be pretty cool. I didn't take the chance, but I did linger on that auction more than once.

How does the TL sound with just the B-15 head driving it and just the Bassman 100 driving it?
