Tone wood

Just a couple of general comments.

First, most bass guitars sound slightly or not so slightly different from each other. The only exception I can think of were the mono block early Steinbergers.

Second, it is shabby and sad that TB seems to be unable to host civil discussions about the fairly complicated materials and constructions that make up the bass guitar. Our instrument is a non trivial fabrication of many different materials and technologies. We should be able to exchange interesting, if differing views about this complex topic.

Third, wood is a very complex natural composite material, with substantial variation in structure and properties even within a single species. Posts which trivialize these differences are not well informed.

Come on folks, be kind. That doesn’t mean you have to be nice. Just means you need to be respectful. I guarantee there is no one posting here who has all the answers.
Lots of opinions. Some agree, some don't. Reading only a few pages of this post, I've not seen any hostile talk here. Of course, I have only read about 6 of the 10 pages, but what I've read sound pretty mild.

Justin Chancellor plays with these and he got plenty of aggression ;)

I'd be interested in finding out what you've seen. I can't really believe that the amount of heat coming off of a vibrating string is more than a tiny fraction of the Joules that it takes to move the strings. But I'm interested in seeing the data!

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. There is relatively little energy in the strings to start with, all of it will eventually end up as heat. The issue is the proportion that enters the body and ends up as heat. I have a busy weekend so I doubt I will get as far as decent test rig until next week. Since it is A=440 I'll have to do it on an electric guitar (choice of three) and can add in acoustics too.

Just curious about your assumptions and experiment. I design experiments at work, so I always like to see new ones!

Well the biggest issue is going to be a shoe string budget... Null hypothesis is that there will be little energy transfer.

I now have a tuning fork but then remembered that I have a contact pickup for guitar which might provide better contact. I did once try to use that on a shamisen body once and that certainly doesn't vibrate much! I can't calibrate it for overall energy, but I can compare it against an acoustic.

Ideally I'd have a tuning fork of known mass and energy to vibrate at a given SPL I could screw to a guitar, but that's not very practical in terms of cost and complexity.

Another approach might be to string a guitar up with two A strings and use a gk3a pickup to pull off just the signal from the A string I don't pluck, provided I can sort out the pin outs. The pickup I have. The tricky bit there is I don't have a guitar or bass with totally separate saddles, so energy transfer might just be through the bridge. Again, I'm not likely to buy lots of gear to do this. But I could pull the bridge of entirely and just put a couple of studs into the bridge screw holes to anchor the strings that were separated provided I was confident I wouldn't get a string to the eyeball
