Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

After reading about the way Dunlop makes their wah pedals, since the off position is triggered with a button that seems to be always pressed, I’m a bit skeptical on how well the signature fuzz wah will hold up if they use the same design as their cry baby units.

The Foxx is a bit of a PITA to turn it on. I just leave it on (rocked back) and just engage it with a strip looper.
Interesting to see what Dunlop has done.

So i was wrong in saying "Latter" as far as when (errr..when i hear the Wal come in) as it has been a couple years since reading the article, and probably 3 months from when i played it last. I only have about 80% of the song down so far. So if i were to cover this song i would use my Special up to 6:49, then switch to the Wal, as there is an audible change here.

"So it made it onto the album?

“Yes, for the song Descending, which we’ve been playing a little bit of for years as a teaser. We went through every single bass that we had in the studio to see what worked best for the intro, which is basically a triplet high up on the fretboard, hammering on with the second finger.

"That bass ended up being by far and away the best one for the job. It just had the right tone: we used halfwound strings. I go back to the Wal in the middle of the song, where it gets all distorted and heavy, but we’ve been in Europe for a run of festivals and I’m getting used to playing that Stingray for the whole of the song.” JC
Tool's Justin Chancellor: “We wouldn’t be satisfied with something that wasn’t taken as far as we could take it”

Wow! This thread is amazing. There are people here that know more particulars about this guy’s gear than I know about my own gear - And I built a lot of my gear.

Continue….

I'm still learning stuff about my non Tool related gear as i haven't spent stupids amount of time knob twisting on them.lol
My TC Blacksmith had a feature i didnt even bother looking at...and i've had that head since 2014.

Back to Tool. Here's a vid i did about 7 months ago.
SR--pedals--Rat/Eq--Darkglass B7K (as a pre with drive at zero)---Interface. No heads or cabs.
Was my MKII setup for recording and i didnt change anything but a bit more output on Boss Eq and a slight treble/bass adjustment on the B7K. No post editing or compression. I did it this way for comparrison

I picked up one of those rats you posted. What are your settings?

I'm still kinda flipping back and forth with the right toggle, either in center or to the left. The first knob is key in finding the sweet spot when you can just start to hear it kick in.

Looks like yours is different. Mine has the 4th dial above the others. Have you used this one?[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
Yours is the same as mine. He just relocated the blend knob on the top. I think some people requested it, so it saved a bit of room on the board.
I should mention too. My blend knob is at 12 o'clock, as i just noticed its cut off in the pic. What kind of bass do you use with it?

I can't imagine the amount of hours of knob twisting you must have done to get those tones so spot on. Seriously impressive. Also, I knew a stingray could get you sort of close to his Wal tone but I always figured it would be an HH model but that stingray sounded so good.

The "spot on" was definitely a gradual learning curve. I've had the Stingray since new (2001) and had been in cover bands playing stuff like RHCP,QOTSA,Soundgarden etc. So i really got to know the bass and different tonal capabilities, which prepped me for the Tool. Right now my H sounds better for Tool than my HH, just because i haven't had it long and will have to muck around with setups.
I have been doing my own setups and other musicians for almost a couple decades, and this experience has really helped me as well.
But i am learning Descending and will try and put it up soon. Here is my new SR.

Awesome. I'm a five string guy primarily but I'm really tempted to pick up a four string HH stingray specifically and only to learn and play Tool songs. A Wal will never be in my budget.

I hear ya. I wanted a Carl Thompson in 2001 and couldn't afford one and got this.
When i decided to get a Wal?....i worked a whack of overtime to afford it.
