Total solar eclipse 2017 - official thread

We hit the road about 5:00 this morning and made it to Dubois, ID just about 7:00, and despite an almost steady stream of vehicles southbound on I15 we had no trouble finding a good spot to watch from. A few minutes after we arrived my cousin and her family pulled up next to us. Neither of us knew the other was coming. Then, another friend parked two cars down from them. Apparently Dubois was the spot of choice for wandering Montanans!

At any rate, the eclipse was truly spectacular. The weather was perfect, the view unobstructed and everyone seemed to be thrilled by the event. It actually out shone all the hype and hyperbole. I'm so glad I had a chance to take my fsamily to see this unfold.

We didn't stick around after totality, as we had left our animals at home unattended. Back home by 2:00 and hauling hay by 2:30. Ah, the joys of ranching!
I wonder if roosters crowed when the sun came back out?

About 70% in Western NY, or so they say. Viewed thru my welding helmet it didn't look like any more than 50%..... if even that. No darker than any cloudy day around here.

I don't know the exact percentage in Seattle, but it did get darker than it was. Not dramatic though.

Seattle was 92%. 8% of the suns flare is still a buttload of light. The lights light golden & dimmer quality casting crescent shadows thru trees and plants was stunning, but not as if it was 100%
 
IMG_0341.JPG I just happened to be in the path of the totality today. Traveling for work, as usual.

The site I visited in Toccoa GA was really cool about it. They ordered glasses and t-shirts for the entire plant. Also served up popcorn and bottled water from 1:30 to about 3:15ish.

I took some snaps with my phone whilst trying to hold one lens of the glasses in front of it, but no good. The guy next to me had a real camera, and he seemed really into it. I figured he'd have some wicked filter, but no, he also did the trick with the glasses, but he got some good shots.

So the glasses we had were fine, my kids saw it and, being teenagers, thought it was cool, but were not blown away by it (we are just outside Washington DC, so it was still quite bright).

I was at a clients house as it began, could see neighbors and their kids outside with glasses and/or viewers. Eventually when i was done, about 45 minutes into the event, I got outside and noticed it all didn't look much different out, not dark or anything. Took an over the shoulder selfie with my phone (no, I didn't look at the screen) and when i looked at the picture, thought "Well, that just looks like the sun". So I was not overly impressed.

Then I noticed something to the left of the sun - a crescent. Thought it was a bit strange but didn't know what to make of it.

Posted it to FB and a friend said it was Mercury. This makes sense considering its proximity to the sun, and I think I read on the NASA site that Mercury, and another planet and/or stars would be visible in the path of totality.

So that was a happy accident.

I managed to get home to use the glasses we had in time to see a fair bit of the event, such that it was in the DC area.

It was an amazing experience. We were travelling in central CA and visited a dozen of shops / hardware stores / W'marts to find glasses or welding filters without any success

We started to view the eclipse using the pinhole technique in front of our hotel. Luckily a local guy came outside and circulated a pair of glasses so all the family could have a good view of the 70% of the sun obscured at the peak of the phenomenon. Thanks a gazillion to this guy !!

Man, what a moving experience!

Strangely enough nobody made announcement that "watching an eclipse is considered by the State of California as a possible cause of cancer"
 
If you were unimpressed by the eclipse and you only saw it as partial, then of course you were disappointed.

Suppose you met someone who seemed like the ideal candidate for a new romantic partner. You really hit it off together and this person takes the initiative and suggests you become intimate. You agree and you're really looking forward to this. Your expectations are high.

You begin to get physical and it starts out well. You re both getting into it you think how great this is going to be. But just when the passion builds to a high level, your partner says, "okay, that's enough."

And you stop before you get to the top of the mountain and turn back. Both of you hold hands for the next half hour and you think, 'well that was a giant let down".



I've seen 3 partial eclipses and thought they were worthwhile to watch but wasn't particularly thrilled. Then I saw this eclipse in totality and was mind blown.

It reminded me of my youth when first dating girls. There were cold showers taken. Then there was that first time on the mountain top.

Not Mercury. That's a reflection of the sun inside your camera lens or lens flare. So you did get a good picture of the eclipse.
