While this is true, it was also nice of @S-Bigbottom to stop by for a visit. While I did not keep tabs on what he did or did not do in my bathroom, my later trip to that place did not cause me to curse him. In general I can vouch for his decency as a human being.
I had planned on taking 2 friends with me but they just cancelled. I now have room for up to two guests to accompany me to view the eclipse in southern Illinois. I've asked around and I can't find anyone who is willing and able to go.
So, I am asking the TalkBass community if anyone in my area (Northern Illinois) wants to take advantage of a free ride to and from Southern Illinois in my conversion van to view the eclipse, as well as two nights (Sunday and Monday) camping at Dam West Recreation Area Campground (Carlyle Lake). The only cost to you will be your own food and miscellaneous personal purchases.

I feel it would be a waste of what is - literally - the opportunity of a lifetime to see a total solar eclipse with only me using a comfy conversion van and a prepaid campsite with all the amenities. I'm 49 years old and am responsible and easy to get along with. My only requirements are that you (either 1 or 2 persons) are at least 18 years old and don't have a substance abuse problem.
If interested, please PM me and we'll talk details. If I have more than one response, I'll give priority to the earliest one that is agreeable.

What did you get for viewing?
We're not in the path of totality & would need to drive hundreds of miles to get there.
I've been looking at eclipse glasses online today & my best bet seems to be to get a sheet of solar filter & put them on some existing sunglasses or 3D glasses.

I've been hearing stories of phony eclipse glasses being sold.
I'm going to use my welding helmet and welding glasses. You can safely watch the eclipse through a #14 welding lens. I've found that combining the #10 glasses and #9 helmet is works for me, I used that combination to try to see the Venus transit. Needed magnification for that one which I didn't have.

If your 10hrs estimate doesn't account for increased traffic, I'd allocate extra time. I'm starting to get worried about driving on the day of. I'm traveling to Nashville the day before, and need to drive about an hour (w/o traffic) out of town to where I plan on viewing it. I'm expecting the roads to be a total mess... large numbers of people, many of them out of towners (like me), not knowing the roads, trying to to get to the path of totality...
Oh, I am totally bringing the bicycle so I don't have to go anywhere near my car on the day of!
Yeah, there's a special place in Hell for people who are selling glasses that could potentially blind children.
We are projected to have ~93% coverage here in NC. I am looking forward to this.

I been looking so forward to this. Man I hope the weather cooperates next Monday. I keep getting this feeling in my gut that a coastal weather system will brew up. The news been saying we are expecting a busy August-September for tropical systems.... I saw two highway department signs on the roads today warning of driving delays on the 21st.

Yes, 10 hours on a good day. I plan to go poke around Sunday and find me a spot. I'm not headed for any kind of town, just somewhere in the boonies, so let's see how it goes. Bringing an old bike (that I don't care if it gets damaged or stolen) isn't a bad idea either.
I wonder if there are any geostationary satellites positioned over N. America that could take pictures of the eclipse as it occurs. That would be cool.
I got 10 pairs of viewing glasses from B&H online to pass out to family and friends.
And I have a Meade 90mm Maksutov telescope with a computerized motor drive that I borrowed from a friend. I bought a Mylar solar filter and a camera adapter for my Nikon D60 to go with it.
We're getting 66% partial in SoCal but watching Totality: The Great American Eclipse on Amazon Prime made me wish I could view totality.

My band is playing a solstice party here in Oregon where we will have full totality. Looking forward to it.
It's been done before.
The International Space Station will be recording this eclipse. I believe that it will be streamed live on the internet.
