Maybe transparency is only relevent in amplifiying something like a jazz guitar, or upright bass. At least it is possible to say that a jazz guitar has a sound chamber of it's own. That establishes the tone you have in the first place. Then.....you could decide if the amp replicated that sound. The electric bass, with choices of wood, pickups, construction, etc .......is still entirely interactive with the amp and speakers. It has a pre-disposition to a voice; but it doesn't make a significant sound. Go play it for someone without an amp.! They'll be real impressed.
Wouldn't we have to describe the most transparent amp as the one with the least distortion? And aren't we talking about the amp section only? I would think that making "tone" would be the important job of a preamp section.
