True. I guess competition isn't really the right word, but I am still wondering if it can get some of the 400+ character with the changed out power tubes.

The only reason i can see for 12 power tubes is that you can still get full power if yous put 6L6ers in it. You only really need 8 EL34 to get 300 watts.

here's a reason: clean headroom at high volume. If you ever tried a YBA-200, you know that is exactly what was lacking in their last attempt at an all-tube bass amp

The YBA-200 is running 4 6550 or KT88 though. I think the reason it lacks headroom is mostly because it's under trannied. That's how they can make it so light. It's light even considering it has toroidal trannies.

Given the same tubes installed the YBA-200 should get as clean and loud as a Hiwatt DR201, right? Don't think that's going to happen.

I think the difference in headroom between 8 and 12 EL34 would be marginal in this case. (Heck, the VB2 can get 300w out of SIX EL34, if you use the right tubes and drive them really hard).

The difference between 8 and 12 6L6 is probably much more noticeable, is my guess.

I'm a bit of a tube newbie so you'll have to excuse my ignorance... Why would the difference be different between 8 and 12 6L6? Would it be a difference in volume?

I'm sure the VB2 can get 300w, but cranked like that ain;t what I mean by "clean headroom". You have a point about the transformer though. We'll just have to see how the YBA300 sounds! I'm pretty sure they used the number and tubes they did for a reason...

As soon as I get rid of my YBA200 and pick up an SVT, this happens I bet this amp will be awesome. I've loved every piece of Traynor/Yorkville stuff I've owned.

Nothing not real about toroidals. They do the same except better, less noise etc. I've used a few valve amps with toroidals and a hell of a lot with Partridges, the ones with toroidals tend to have fiddlier preamps due to the modern, which is much more to do with the tone than the output transformer.

Thanks for that. I don't know the reasons behind what I heard. I like toriods in my SS heads - lighter, no hum, and a better package size. Win win win.

i doubt it'll do 300W, 150W is more like it. You can get 300W outta 6 el34's but it's running them really hard and most of todays valves will flash accross

I was about to pull the trigger on a VB-3 last year and then heard the rumour of the 300 watt tube amp in the works from Traynor. It's all about patience isn't it lol.....

I also owned the YBA200, and like others have expressed for years, the clean sound at high volumes was what was most lacking. Otherwise it was great! The user serviceability on this amp and the expanded headroom are the key features that have my attention.

I'm some what surprised that no one has asked what brand of preamp and power tubes Yorkville are using in the YBA-300.

FYI, they're Ruby tubes.
