I made my own 62 style Squier logo decal for my VM Jazz. I agree it's all about aesthetics but couldn't stand the fake Fender thing (It did have one).
Now, I also have a P bass which is mostly aftermarket parts, a Fender pup and a Squier body and I made a fake '71 Fender decal for it. It's not a Squier, or anything else for that matter and there's no way it would pass for a real one. But the decal just felt right.
So it's a complex issue.

Oh man I'm so disappointed right now. I orders some flat black tuners and got them today, finally, and they're LEFT handed tuners!! I was so psyched to get them on my P :( looks I'll be waiting about 2 weeks again. At least. Dang it. Needed to vent.

You know, I've often found myself wanting to hit the "thanks" or "+1" button here, only to realize it doesn't exist. Lots of other forums feature it and it's actually a simple mod to make to vB. Needs to be added IMO.

Oh, and +1 to gregmon posting pics of his bass with the new black tuners to match the black BAII.

So here are some pix of continuing experiments in VM Jazz passive control plates: First, here's a pretty-side-out shot of three controls plates - bottom is the stock plate with the usual smudges, finger prints and Vol/Vol/Tone controls. Middle is fake carbon fiber with blend/master volume/tone using 500K pots and push-pull switch for series/parallel. Top is blend, master volume and bass/treble stacked with a separate DPDT switch for series parallel.

The top one is the most recent. It has 500K blend and master volume with treble bleed on the volume (100K resitor with 0.001 uF cap). The treble and bass controls are stacked - treble on top - both 500K. The treble uses a 0.1 uF cap and bass uses a 0.01uF cap. The tone controls both work surprisingly well, given that they're passive, as does the treble bleed. I got the basic circuit from SD Tonefiend Archives and changed the cap and pot values. Here it is in-situ.

I want to try a 500K "no load" pot for the treble tone control but they don't exist for stacked pots. I have one and I may try a blend, stacked master volume and bass, separate treble arrangement.

Sorry, no sound-bites 'til after Xmass. I'm still looking for a number if they're going;).

What would be unfortunate is if the desired PG shape ran straight through the middle of screwhole between the lower control plate and the neck. Looking at a Jag PG on a Jazz here, it's too close to call. I would recommend you design a PG that accommodates the shape of the Jazz below the neck. Maybe move the lower switch plate a little closer to the bridge and strings. Near as I can tell, there would be one screwhole from the Jazz pickguard that would remain visible (the tip of the lower bout), with perhaps a bit of a 2nd one near the Jag's lower switch plate area. But it's certainly doable, and would look great!

Well, I've decided to give this a go. I've bought a 5 string Jazz copy for a whopping $145 and it's actually not bad, other than the nut needing replacing and the neck being a bit of a baseball bat, but I'm thinking about thinning it down.

So far I have scanned the Jazz and Jaguar PG's and then in Illustrator merged the 2 to create a hybrid template. I also scored a brand new set of Washburn active electrics which I'll cut and mod using the Jaguar switches.

I'll start this after Christmas, once I finish my Silvertone refurb, so keep an eye out for a new build thread. I'm calling it the 'Fender Strat-o-bass' :)
