Tricked Out Squier Club Part 3

I've been using Active EMG's in many of my Basses and Guitars since the late 80's. My thoughts have always been that if you start out with a Hot extended range signal, you can always EQ it with your Preamp to cut anything unwanted. It's easy to take something out but, you can't bring up something that's not there to begin with. I also use various Sansamp products to attain all the Dirt necessary.
I'm currently at 10 Basses w/ Active Pickups and 10 Passive Basses. No Active Preamps unless you consider the Active Tone on the 2 Sets of X Series Pickups I have. I also have the JVX Set in my MIM Geddy Lee.

I like the G&L 9v harness, the Kubicki Factor 9v, the EMGX 9v, the Audere 9v and the John East 9v. If I had to choose a favorite - the G&L L2000 would be hands down, followed closely by a Kubicki.

I have EMGX J's in a bass and the Geezer Butler P in another - like them both! They are known for being clean sounding if that works for you.

I forgot to mention that I have a Geezer P in one of my Model T's and Love it ! I have the Set (P/J) but the J just fills the hole because I just don't have any love for Bridge pickups. The Geezer P is wound close to 11k ohms w/ Alnico 5 Poles/Magnets and IMO that's where they should be wound to to get that awesome Vintage Mid-Range Grind/Growl. They are very similar to the Fender Vintage 59 that comes in the Mike Dirnt P's, the Original 62, the Custom Shop 62 and others. Seymour Duncan Antiquity II and their Vintage P-Bass SPB-1 are spot on also.

I recently found a set of SD Active Lightnin Rods used on Reverb very cheap as I've been wanting to try them to see if they really sound vintage w/ the Hot Active output, as advertised by SD. I installed them in another Model T. SD wasn't BS'in let me tell you. They have that awesome Vintage tone that many of us strive for and I feel they are more dynamic compared to their other (APB-1) Active P offering, similar to the dynamics of EMG's X series pickups. I'm very happy with them but, just like the Geezer P/J set, the Bridge pickup just fills the hole and is disconnected.

This bass is a parts Squier and just recently changed out black cover DiMarzio Model P's to cream covered DiMarzio Model P's.

Would I be out of line to suggest either a cream or an anodized gold pickguard? As in, something that blends better with those warm gold and yellow tones than plain white?

Not out of line at all!
But I hate metal pickguards and I don't have a cream one, so this is that

Well, for what it's worth, I just bought a pickguard with a slightly unusual color (black/cream/black) from these people…

I wasn’t sure if “tricked out” meant visual pizazz or if any mods were in the definition...but I see all sorts of stuff here.
So, I’m always up for showing mine...

The VMJV...
High mass bridge, SD Quarter Pound J pickups, SD 2-band Blackout preamp with A/P switch, Passive tone control always in the circuit. After the mods and a really detailed setup, this bass plays so unbelievably smoothly, it’s hard to believe it’s a Squier. Definitely a solid keeper.

The Affinity JV Fretless
Fender Marcus Miller Jazz V pickups, de-fretted neck, I will keep it passive although CTS pots and Orange cap are planned. I most recently installed a Hipshot KickAss bridge and a Roasted Maple/Ebony neck is being built by Warmoth as of this writing.

And finally, the “Beater”.
Affinity JV body with VMJV neck, routed for MM bridge pickup (wired Parallel and coil choice, no series), SD blackout preamp with passive tone control (save as the VM but no A/P switch and stacked Treble/Bass), American Standard Jazz neck pickup (which is ironically made in Mexico...old photo shows SD neck pickup), High mass bridge.

I went back and saw my old posts from 2018. All three of these have traded parts and are completely different basses now...
The sunburst traded necks and hardware with the Natural finish.

That neck was then traded with the black one; it’s the same type of VM Jazz V neck, but the one that came on the Natural bass has a slightly slimmer profile. The black one moved up from Beater status, got a new pickup and bridge.

At this point, I believe I am satisfied with what they all have become, and will leave them alone.

Started out as a stock VM 15 years ago, over the years every piece of it has been upgraded, every wire, pot and jack, neck, strap buttons and tuners. Latest piece changed again this week, a new 2020 CV 70s Jazz neck.

Love it! Don’t see many with that pickup combo how does it sound?

It sounds deep phat and awesome. They go together great, my fave two tones in one bass. No loss of thunder, I’m not a fan of PJ basses because the J is too thin for me. My Fatfish has a J in the neck which I love and decided to do this one in a similar manner with the Ric pickup in the same position and it delivers

Those are all closeups of the same neck. It was a 2019 (2nd gen) Classic Vibe '70s Jazz that was on display at my local Guitar Center. I had a bass for sale in the TalkBass Classifieds, but I was getting zero-traction here, so I decided to trade it in towards this one. Not long after, I sold the body to a fellow TB'er out in France, since it was the neck I was mainly interested in.

I fixed up an old lefty neck I had laying around, paint the headstock Black and stained the rosewood fretbord dark with Ebony stain. Looks great on my Cabronita. It will look even better with a Red Headstock insignia, IMO.
