Tricked Out Squier Club

Well I have my 83 Squier with sunburst ash body, a Leo Quann II bridge, Pearl white pickguard, Hipshot Drop D. Just a statement if you guys don't mind. I picked up the Classic Vibe 60's p-bass and that neck is awesome and feels just like my 83's neck. Could you imagine that neck on the Vintage natural finished p-bass body. I would LOVE that sound, feel and playability. Just a thought.

Is this close enough?

I have a squier ii like that.
I was wanting to do a deluxe p with it, using a stacked jazz humbucker.
I've contimplated doing a p/p setup....I might have to rethink this one again.
Hot bass btw....

I´d love to join the club. But before that I desperately need some advice.
I bought a Allparts 70th neck, planning to put it on a mid nineties Squier Standard Jazz body, which I refinished in vintage white. The neck pocket on that Squier is way too wide (about 2mm). Any suggestions (other than the obvious "get a neck/body that fits")?
The neck is a beauty and I don´t want to make it unusable for the future by drilling holes in the wrong place. Assumed that I get along with the gap for the time being: How could I determine the right angle/position to fit the neck to the body? I reckon the position of the 4 holes is the same on any Squier and Fender Bass since neckplates are... so I just need to get the neck in the right position?

thanks gord_oh. it's my absolute favorite player right now. the neck is terrific and this thing sounds incredible. if you are considering this setup, you won't be sorry. it sounded great with the original pickups i put in it, but the 1/4 pounders just sent it over the top.

Get some monofiliment fishing line and string it up like your E and G strings normally would be when installed and center them over the pickups to get the neck into the right location that way.

Thanks a lot! That is a neat idea. But I came up with something else myself. Maybe not as sophisticated, since your approach would make the bass perfect. I´ll just go to a local shop and ask if they are so kind as to unscrew a neck so I could put mine in the pocket and mark the position for the screws. The only Fender I have at home at the moment is a five-string, so that doesn´t help. Then I´ll just put the neck on the Squier body for the time being. Maybe I will close the gaps by gluing woodstripes in, sand them, refinish and just play the bass till I stumble over a vintage white body. But thanks!

Careful with that! It just may not work as sweetly as you think. The mounting holes can vary dramatically between instruments.

You are right. I got some maple veneer (0,9mm) from a carpenter. He was such a nice guy, he refused to take money for it. He even didn´t allow me to put some in the coffee kitty :)

Since the pocket on the body is 2 1/2" and the neck is 2 7/16" it´s 1.6mm difference. If I got all the units conversion right. I glued a stripe on each side of the pocket and sanded it down, till the neck snucked neatly in. Then I refinished it... what went out really awful. But I don´t care, there is still the clearcoat to apply and most of it will be covered by the pickguard either way. Thank you all for your support in this case... I guess it´s appropriate to close it for now, since I don´t have anything to show at the moment :)

That is a plastic mirror pickguard that came with the Squier. It is supposed to be some Special Edition with a matching headstock. Its the same price as a regular Squier Standard P/J, so I got it instead.

...

I was looking for a P/J and the matching headstock won me over.
That thing is SWEET. I'm thinking about picking one up and souping it up... Did it need a lot of setup work? Truss rod/intonation and stuff? Or was it good right from the factory? How are the stock pickups? Any better than the squier affinity series stuff?

I swapped the strings a day later to Chromes, so I had to do a complete setup anyway. I usually play with a much lower action that the usual ones that basses tend to be shipped with. If you are happy with the action, straight out of the box, you still need to do intonation, I'm afraid.

The stock pickups are pretty good. They have that modern voicing. I cannot say if they are the same as those on the Affinity, I've read somewhere on TB that they are not the same. I am planning to drop a GFS P pickup in there when I offload a bit of gear.

Few irritations is that there are some sloppy glue stains from the fretting. So I had to sandpaper them off. At about 3-4 locations. The pots are also a little scratchy when they aren't turned often, so I'll probably replace them when I get the GFS pickup. My bridge is also a few millimeters out of alignment, but nothing that affects the sound.

decided on doing the double p setup on mine.
im not into such a modern, harsh tone though.
im going to go for something a bit more mellow.
