Tricked Out Squier Club

1. Is there something missing on the bottom of the pups? Springs?

Nope

2. How do I raise them up. The pup screws don't look long enough.

I find that 2 pieces of 1/2" weather striping stacked one atop the other works best. compresses quite easily, yet give more than enough support. Also allow for raising of the pickups w/no effort

3. Are the Black plastic covers usually attached, they just pull off?

Most pickups, the covers are not attached...no worries there! It does depend the p'up. In your case you are fine.

What's the diff between a standard Squier
Affinity and a Squier II?

Hay Joe,

There could be different answers because
they have been making Affinities for a while.
My P has a solid Alder body. Some affinities
have basswood bodies. The quality of parts
and workmanship is not totally consistent.

I would suggest playing before buying.

Mine plays as good as any P I have played.
It has a beautiful fretboard...... It was just
begging for better pots, a cap and a new
Fender 62 pup. I also got new metal knobs
with set screws.

Mine is an Indonesian made bass purchased
new in about 2004. It was a cheap bass in
a bass and amp combo deal. Other Affinities
sold in those packages sucked.

Mine sure does not suck. It kicks butt,

My Affinity is a 1997-8 version - and it's pretty nice too. I really don't care what the body wood although it isn't plywood. The neck is great solid and straight.

One thing is that at it's age there isn't a scratch or dent on it anywhere. The clear coat on the neck and head is nicely aged and yellowed too.

Fortunately the machines are the bigger ones - bigger than even my MIM, gear-wise anyway.

Here's my lefty Korean P Bass 4 string modded to all hell.

PBASS.jpg

Converted to a 5 string (new nut & bridge & 5th tuner added)
Bill Lawrence P46 pickup
thumb rest
Japanese ebay block inlay decals
J bass bridge cover
P bass pick up cover

Had it forever & after I got a 6 string, there was no going back to not having a low B. There wasn't anything from Fender offered in a lefty 5 on the lower end so I went to work!

I found a Bronco last week on CL. I have a GFS Lil Killer pickup and Dunlops stap buttons here - waiting on the Chromes. I'm thinking about doing a refinish in Hemi Orange lacquer (closest I've found to Capri). Looking at a precision wiring kit (250 pots, cap, switchcraft jack).

The one piece maple neck just feels awesome and the tone is nice right now. Weighs 7 lbs, so its going to be a nice travel bass or a go-to if my back is out that day.

Going to be be slow going on the mod (esp the finish). Need to get a heat gun and have to find the time to do the refinish.

Very attractive bass, hope it plays as good as it looks.

Thank-you. Yes it does. It plays beautifully, (Jazz neck), especially since it's not to heavy. side note: I took it to my last gig and played it through an Aguilar DB 210 and a Carvin 50 watt tube head. The drummer forbid me from using any other combonation of gear ever again.:D

So - how how's he gonna play with all the broken fingers that you gave him for that veiled threat?

I like the ultimate austerity look to it - super clean and functional.

My Squier Affinity Jazz V: I removed the nonfunctional pickguard, polished the body with dry erase board cleaner and applied the 5.0 emblem. Stock electronics and hardware are just fine. It plays in tune and stays in tune with the tonal variety one expects from a Jazz Bass. This instrument is solid!

Updating my picture.

Recently got my hands on a reasonably priced Dimarzio Model P+J (DP126) and installed it. The ability to adjust the poles together with pickup height adjustments means that all string volumes can be balanced for both pickups. I wired it Volume/Blend/Tone and I love it. Sounds great, very hot and a tad more modern sound with more high. My first complete wiring/soldering job too.

Word of warning though, the J pickup was too large for the cavity, so I had to sand down the cover quite a lot to shove it in.

Another change I had done a month or so earlier was to change the bridge saddles to Allparts Vintage threaded saddles, now I can adjust the width of the strings much easier. They look great too. Another word of warning, the intonation screw for the Allparts saddle is bigger than the Squier one and requires the screw hole on the bent plate to be enlarged.

Not forgetting the Jazz style knobs.
