Hows the revers headstock workin out for you? Getting more tension on the lower strings?

I don't think I've noticed any physical improved or downfall, I just bought it for the looks.

That's a fine looking bass right there! I'd love to have a reverse headstock on mine....I'll have to look into that. =)

Thanks, I got the neck from Rondo Music a few years back.

I am loving that racing stripe! The pickup looks great, too. :D

I had some Fralins in my Squier Jazz V but they crapped out on me. I found some more here on TB and just installed them.

Sounds huge and killer. I have the pickup heights dialed in pretty good, but will fine tune the next couple days. I also have a wiring harness installed with 250 pots, mallory cap and switchcraft jack. I had to route the holes a bit in the existing plate. Also wearing GHS Precision Flats (and tort guard).

Really digging the sound and feel of this bass! Gotta get some better pics tomorrow to post.

I need Squier help please. I traded an old cabinet for this P bass. This is my first Squier and the first P bass in my collection. All others are Jazzes and Jaguars and all original. The previous owning install Bassline Quater Pounders, or should I say tried to install. The pups were flush with the body. A few questions.

1. Is there something missing on the bottom of the pups? Springs?
2. How do I raise them up. The pup screws don't look long enough.
3. Are the Black plastic covers usually attached, they just pull off?
4. Does it matter which pup is located next to the neck? One had a Black lead, the other is a White lead.
5. A few of the tuners wobble. What do y'all use for replacement tuners?

Thanks in advance

alan

you can use springs or foam pads. springs will give you a little more range of adjustment IMO

2. How do I raise them up. The pup screws don't look long enough.
The screws should be plently long enough unless you want the pups super high. you can get longer screws at a hardware store

3. Are the Black plastic covers usually attached, they just pull off?
duncan covers just come off, usually not attached to the pup

4. Does it matter which pup is located next to the neck? One had a Black lead, the other is a White lead.
black is ground. here is a diagram: http://www.seymourduncan.com/pdfs/support/schematics/std_pbass.pdf

depending on the size of the peg you have a few options. Hipshot makes some decent ones, of you can buy no name off brands. either way youll most likely have to drill new holes. as long as they keep a tune, dont rattle or wobble with string tension you should be fine.

hope that helps.

I may live in Hooterville, but for three weeks I hit ever big-name, mom-n-pop and decent sized hardware store in Riverside, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington Beach and a few of the other large city's hardware stores and I never found ANY #2 wood screws at 1.75" long, Phillips heads or not.

If you find any of them - it's gotta be a fluke or something they had on their shelves when they bought the place.

Seems like I've seen them around here. Ill double check and see again.

I'm turning my '89 squier II p into a pj. Should be finishing it up after a paint job and pickguard.
I have fender usa pups I'm putting into it. Happened to make a pj set on accident after parting some basses out.
I have an s1 switch I'm debating on using. Can't decide between that or a pickup selector.

I can't say much about an S1 for a PJ - but I like the effect of the Series/Parallel push-pull I put on my VM-Jazz.

Unknown to me is whether it would work on a PJ or not.

Actually I didn't like the Series/Parallel switch at first and though it was a waste of time and money - but the more I use it the more I like it.

What's the diff between a standard Squier Affinity and a Squier II?

I've also grown accustomed to the stacked pots on the VM-Jaguar and think it's just fine the way it is. Somehow I don't think it can be improved upon by much.

Found this on the wall at the local bar. It is their for sit ins and open mike nights. It was just unplayable!!! So i took it home and set it up, put some eb flats on it and replaced the pots and jack. It really is a nice playable bass now and sounds just as good as my us p-bass. Very cool I cant wait to see the look on peoples faces who pick it up and play it again. So i guess i will be getting the matt freeman p bass or one of the other squier's that are out now. I am a changed man!!!!

Next mod is a black pearloid pickguard.

PB070031.jpg

Oh man, that is a beauty and I love what you've done with it, but I wish I could talk you out of the black pearloid PG. The lighter colored PG really makes the pickup housing and the V8 emblem pop out. I think it looks great as-is, and of course it's your baby, but have you considered a silver PG to match the pickup and stripes? Or maybe parchment or mint green or white pearlod?

Any way you go, it'll still be hot.

My wife gave my son a Squier Affinity P bass
before she passed away.

My son never played it much. He likes his Jass
bass.

I got it out a little while back and it plays so
nice.

I replaced the pots and cap and then replaced
the pickup with a one of those Fender Original
62 P Bass Pickups.

It still just looks like a Squire,,,,,,,,,,,,

But it's a wolf in sheep's clothing,

My son has yet to play it. Hope he likes it,

squier II's were made in korea in the late 80's and early 90's. the quality IMO is better than the recent affinity series basses. they may have been labeled a squier II but the squiers coming out of the two korean factories at the time were way underrated. i have a MIK '89 squier II and a MIK '93 squier, both are great players, the neck profiles are super comfortable. one of my favorites for a pbass. (dont ask measurements and such, dont think i could do it.) my squier II i scored at a pawn shop for $130.

looks way different now, and it will even more when i finish it.
decided on a 3 way toggle pup selector, although i did figure out the s1 switch for the pj.
in theory it would have worked. but ill think ill save it for another project.

FYI: the korean plants have been long shut down. these for the last few being produced.

its a sleeper, nothing wrong with that. ;)
play the hell out of it! nice additions BTW.

once i get my own internet back, instead of using my GFs or my phone illl try and update this thread.

All great info - thanks.

I think I'll start gathering the parts to build a copy of either a No Caster or perhaps a copy of a first LPB bass by Fender as a clone for myself. I don't think I want to pay all that money for an original anyway.

Just wondering when Fender put the first LPB bass out into production? I'm trying to go with a lipstick p'up here in case you know anything about that version.

I also see that the Squier IIs have the very small tuner bobbins. Was there a time when they were more traditionally sized?

yeah, the squier II tuners are the same size as the recent affinity tuners, pretty much direct drop ins in fact.
To my knowledge the japan squiers at the time had standard sized tuners while the korean mdels had the smaller diameters.

After looking at all the insane deals on Affinity bodies floating around in the interwebs I've been thinking about buying one of those and converting it into a 5 string body. The way I see it, you could route larger pickup and neck cavities, drop a 5 string P (or humbucker) pickup and (fretless :smug:) neck in, replace it with a new pickguard, drill holes for a new bridge, and then refinish. Has anyone done this or think it's a good idea?
