Turbosound IP2000 Review

At this time both of my units are in the shop and I have been w/o them for over a month. I am not very happy with TS's customer service.
When one of the drivers went in my iq10 it took a fair bit of time to get back from the Canadian distributors. Bugging them helped.
One developed a loose part floating inside. The other developed a distortion in the vocal frequency range. Just a slight distortion but enough to make it sound bad. I know it wasn't my gear as when I run the exact same system through my K12's and EV subs everything is fine.
No i haven't had them for over a month.
SOOOO I bought two more, after 3 gigs one of them developed a real bad distortion. So bad i had to shut it off and run the outside gig on one. It actually did a good job. Let me again point out I used additional subs and rolled the Turbo's off at 50hz.
Man was I frustrated. of course all I could think of was what am I doing wrong with my set up. Sweetwater was great and took them back. Turns out the one that crapped out was a "demo" unit.

No I can't blame them for that. I knew it was a demo but frankly the ink was so faded on the controls it looked like a return.
Has anyone compared the turbo sound to the EV Evolve 50? I got two of the EV units arriving this week to try out
Just put a pair into service this week. I think you will be pleased with your purchase.
But to get back on topic, I did not directly compare to the Turbosound.
ok, thanks. Eager to try the EVs. All the youtube demos make them sound very thin, but all the reviews seem very positive. will be fun to try them out.
I think I saw a shoot out review when I was looking at the Turbosound's and they may have been included.
You're probably talking about this one, but it didn't include the EVs.

Got my two units back and used one for a small gig tonight. i did sound for a 3 piece band using a drum machine/ i used one extra 12" EV powered sub. The unit performed fine. Fingers crossed about the other.

Thanks for the excellent account of your experience with the ip2000 units. I just got a pair of these for use with my wedding band company, running for the most part, a trio (bass/gtr.drums) with 3 vocalists through an allen and heath Mixwizzard 16:4.
Based on my experience, the units arent quite as loud as a traditional speaker/pole combo, but have enough volume, and the ease of set up is a huge factor. we play 40-60 shows a year for 125 guest wedding on average, so space is a big factor. they need a live band that can fit, yet provide the style appropriate for a wedding, but not at excessive volumes. I thought these would be perfect, and they are with one notable exception.
No matter what I do, i cannot keep just MY mic from occasionally over modulating/distorting the column. Its very slight, but it should not be happening. I suspect this is a gain/volume issue.
My question for you is this: What are your volume settings on the ip2000 itself, and what are the gain settings you are using on that unit. Some have said to drop the gain and max the volume, and this has solved the problem quite a bit (not great with running sound, admittedly i boosted the gain from the start and all sorts of hell occured, but fixed it soon).
It could be that I need to run a compression unit on my vocals, and that I have just too big a voice in the upper baritone tenor range...not joking or bragging, this never happens with our diva like female singers voice (alto range) when we incorporate her, or the other 2 guys singing back up. Just me when i lay into it.
Id really be interested in hearing your volume gain settings on the unit, then also on your board.

Interesting you mentioned this distortion . I feel this may have been the issue I had with one of mine that I sent back. It seemed to distort slightly in the make range but in the upper part of the tower. The same setup going in a pair of QSC K10.2's didn't have this issue.
In your case if you are really strong there the obvious reply would be to back off. if not I would try a limiter on your voice vs. a straight compressor. My Mackie DL32r has a nice one built in. However here is the gotcha, you must split your mike into two channels on the board. You can use a simple Y cable for this. Then run the limiter channel to the fronts and the unlimited channel to your monitors. Never put compressed or limited vocals into a monitor. Feedback potential is huge and the singer tends to blow their voice as they have toi sing harder or so they think.

Thanks brother. Yeah, I will have to back off a bit overall. I think cranking the master volume on the ip2000 itself to 10 might help, then backing my overall gain on the board down will do the trick.
