Wow!!!
Awesome help there!

If you wouldn't mind, could you post this to the Two Notes Opus Thread.

I wish the mods could merge these two threads, but I don't even know if they can still do that and not screw up the thread watchers.
Sure, I'll post there too. I didn't even know that other thread existed, when I searched around on the Opus found this one.

All -

After spending a few days with the Opus in my rig, I noticed significant processing hiss, even with everything bypassed (essential a blank preset). After troubleshooting my overly complicated pedalboard, I isolated it specifically to the Opus in the FX loop. Could not figure out any other way to eliminate it- on a lark, instead of connected the 1/4 line out to amp FX return, I switched it to the "to speaker" 1/4 jack, changed the switch to line level from instrument (after experimenting with both) and presto, all hiss gone!

If I understand the manual, that "speaker" jack is passing completely unprocessed dry signal back to my amp & cab for use live, which is what I want. The Opus is still putting out the fully processed signal via XLR as desired at usable level into 3rd Gen FocusRite 8i6 into Reaper. The input level meter on the Opus barely registers, but after 2 or 3 days of recording clips and A-B comparing, I'm pretty happy with the results.

So your FX Send is going into the instrument Input on the Opus and your Speaker Out on the Opus is running into the FX Return at Line level with the DI Out into the FocusRite?

I am glad you got it sorted.

@Ross Davies can you explain why this would happen?

Signal chain is complex, summary goes like this:

bass -> overdrive/distortion pedals -> ParaEQ -> HX Effects and 2x H9s in 4CM (amp FX send goes through these) -> Opus instrument input -> Opus Speaker Out -> amp FX return

EDIT: also, MIDI goes from HX FX-> H9 #1 -> H9 #2 -> Opus. I thought it might be a ground loop, did a bunch of testing & using 2 Ebtech Hum eliminators at every point in chain, only thing that fixed it was using the speaker output.

I also installed the included free copy of GENOME & fiddled around with the VST3 plugin in Reaper & Audacity, nice bonus tool. It occurred to me that I could bypass my Opus, record a single "dry" (as far as the Opus is concerned) demo clip, they use GENOME on the recording to demo setting changes in real time on my PC- much easier than the process I previously used. So the question is - what GENOME effects blocks & signal chain order come closest to the Opus? This is what I came up with for starters (I don't use the pre-amp block in the Opus):

NG-1 Noise Gate -> TSM Power Amp -> DynIR Cab -> Torpedo WOS Post Effects (everything bypassed except EQ)-> Studio Enhancer -> Torpedo WOS Post Effects (everything bypassed except Reverb)

duplicating Torpedo WOS blocks is required to use same EQ & Enhancer signal order from the Opus.

Thoughts?

@Ross Davies - this would be a lot easier if there was an "Opus Post Effects" in GENOME that exactly mirrored the EQ/Enhancer/Reverb of the Opus, call that a feature request! The custom EQ is also not quite the same between the Opus & Torpedo WOS Post Effects.

So, testing my own theory... I recorded a few clips today & compared the Opus processing to GENOME with identical settings (as close I could get with signal chain above) added in post to DI out from my GK RB700-II. I recorded simultaneously from GK DI and the Opus XLR into 2 inputs on my Focusrite.

Other than the GENOME coming in about 4db hotter (maybe due to gain setting on the Focusrite, and/or some slight difference on the GK DI output level), they sounded about 95%+ identical, close enough to use GENOME to audition/tweak settings for Opus presets. I cut it by 4db in Audacity to look at the wave forms, see attached.

I installed Genome after I got my Opus, looked around a bit, decided that since I don't record anything, and I don't want to take a laptop to a gig with me to use on stage, so I didn't see the point of the learning curve and deleted it.
It has some amazing capabilities, but most of them seem to be geared towards studio work and guitarists.
If I recorded regularly, it would be great!

Thanks for clarifying this. The Speaker out can function as a THRU, however this will not work in all rigs and in a lot of cases, it will induce quite a lot of interference / noise as it is intended as a speaker level pass through. Have you tried the Line Out Routing Mode in the main menu? In addition, can you confirm you are using the included grounded power supply? Thanks so much!

Thanks for the test here - there will certainly be some discrepancies as the components in GENOME have been optimised for the GENOME interface. GENOME also has selectable oversampling which is another factor to bear in mind. A great use case nonetheless however!

I previously tried Line Out routing with it set to bypass all the processing blocks, still got noticeable hiss. I am using Cioks DC8 power supply (isolated/dedicated). I have way too much stuff on my pedalboard & have had ground loop & buffer issues with some other pedals in the past, it's probably not playing nice with one or more of the other pedals. But thankfully the speaker out/line level combination works for me!

You you might add a note in the manual about speaker out acting as dry THRU with caveats, would have saved me some time.

Thanks for getting back to me - would be good to hear how you get on here. To clarify a little more: the Speaker Out is not intended or specified as a THRU; instead it was spec'ed to be used with an amp connected at the input of Opus, and a speaker on that output. If you use it as a split there is no buffering or isolation happening which could result in some nasty noise. Sometimes it works, but it is not a splitter with isolated inputs/outputs. As such, we wont put this in the user guide as it wont work in a lot of cases. You could try a simple DI to placed after that TO SPEAKER OUT with a nice isolation transformer in it; this should minimise any noise and get you where you want to be - Let me know if this helps!

Signal is going from speaker out into the amp's effects loop 1/4 TS return jack - I tried putting an Ebtech Hum Eliminator with isolation transformer after the Opus, didn't make any difference with/without it, I don't know why, but it's much lower noise from the speaker out Jack than the 1/4 line out.

Thanks for getting back to me and I am glad to hear it has worked. The noise difference is likely the difference in level outputted by the line and the Speaker Out outputs in this instance. Let us know if you need anything else.

New user here…

Anybody have a solution?
I am a new Opus user and I modify “Aviator” preset and select n Ampeg 8-10 cab, pick and setup mics and when I go to a gig and connect my iPad via Bluetooth…. I see a totally different unidentified cabinet and I cannot change the cabinet? Happened two times and I had to bypass the unit.

Why is the cabinet changes with no possibility to change at the gig? I can change all other parameters?

Thanks for getting in touch. Ross from Two notes here. When you create the preset at home, can I confirm you are saving this? Similarly, how are you creating the preset - are you using the desktop variant of Torpedo Remote? Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yes I save and all my preamp and eq settings are exact but cab is not appearing as set

I use hardwire to desktop Mac

Help! Gig tomorrow am
In Torpedo Remote with the Virtual Cabinet tab selected, do you have "Bass" and "Torpedo" selected in the top right of the same box that has the dropdown list of cabinets?

If you use any guitar cabs, you will need to select "Guitar" as well.

The Fridge IR is under the Bass selection.

For reverence, the box in Torpedo Remote / Virtual Cabinet is referenced in the User's Manual -

HERE

Here is a screenshot of my Torpedo Remote with Fridge selected.

Thanks for getting back to me. I think the issue may be that the cabinet you are selecting for the preset is not saved to the OPUS hardware. Can you go to the cabinet manager tab on the desktop variant of Torpedo Remote, then check to see if the cabinet you are using in the preset is saved to the Torpedo Hardware? If not, please import this on this tab, re-save your preset and you should be set!
