yeah, also in an interview, john and chad were saying that when they wrote the chorus, john wanted it really layed back and slow, but chad didnt, so they had to settle for havin it inbetween, havin that dragging feel but speed it up, and it was johns idea to have it start with the drums

also i cant see how the chili peppers ripped off tom petty unless they did it on purpose, which they obvously didnt, so they didnt really rip it off, i think tom petty is just bein petty...:hiding: lol, anyway hes decided not to sue them

john has alot of ideas for the sound he wnated in the chilis new music, but the rest of the band do aswell, before john was in the band, they still had awsome musc (to me) so its a band effort

as for typical guitarists, every guitarist i know has their moments.
just an hour ago my guitarist (who knows more about guitars than most others i know) was freaked out when i told him he could buy a cheap ashdown 180 bass head and a guitar cab (as long as he doens't crank the bass knob). when he saw the frequencies listed with every ashdown he said "typical bassists, always making things compicated"- i had a laugh at that. i had an even bigger laugh when this came on the screen:
him: "tuner output? *** is that?"
me: "it's so you can tune silently"
him: "right...."

silly guitarists, thinking they need to tune with the volume on.

john frusciante is a great guitarist and is the creative force behind the good chili records (note how bssm was great because john was in the group, one hot minute wasnt too hot, and upon johns return californication was a great album). hes really good and alot of times underestimated. flea, on the other hand, is pretty much what make the chili peppers the chili peppers and not just any other rock band. he constantly comes up with creative and nice sounding basslines and is the emotional core of the group. hes also vital in live shows (during johns awkward phase in the bssm tour when he played off note and off beat, flea saved the performances by compensating (sp?) for his weird guitar work).

John deffo has alot to do with the way the chilis sound now - but before, when he first came in for mothers milk you could see some things going but it was really flea and anton letting john do what he wanted - but he wasn't really confident enough to go crazy with ideas - you can tell his ideas are very kept inside - when bssm was being made you can tell he considers himself a member of the band and thats why it came out so well. If he hadn't of ****ed off during the bssm time - there would be no califonication. I think the last great chilis album was cali. By the way is quite good and the new one is quite good - but they are not top class.

i cant remember what my point was.

Actually, what got me a lot more respect from my guitarist was the time he couldn't get hold of me for a demo he was trying to record. He has a housemate who is a competent guitarist, and he has my backup backup bass (the Squier I bought for my son that he quit using) John let Patrick play the bass for the demo...and it sucked worse than a two dollar hooker.

I became available two days later and recorded a bass line for the demo...and it was much better wothout changing anything else.

Afterward he let me hear the version with Patrick playing bass.

The same guitar, keys, and drum tracks. The same vocal tracks. The only difference was the bass track.

One sucked. One grooved. And I got greatly increased respect out of the deal.

john deffinitly has a big part in the chilis music, but he doesnt write all of there songs or anything, i like his sound with the chili's, but i really liked one hot minute, i dont see whats wrong with it, also Flea wrote 'if' from stadium arcadium, i love that song lol

Okay, now you're talking about RHCP. Read Scar Tissue and you'll realize that none of them would be anywhere without the other and their collaborative method of making music is a harmony in and of itself. Too say anyone in that band makes or breaks it is asinine and really taking away from what the Chili Peppers really stand for.

Remember Frusciante is only the 2nd guitarists to climb a peak with the band. If it weren't for Hillel, RHCP wouldn't exist.

As far as One Hot minute not being hot... I blame Dave Navarro.

Does anyone have any insight as to why Dave Navarro is considered a good guitarist? His playing seems to be all hype no substance.

Even the most "childish" of guitar players as you call them would not think that in the chilis that fleas parts are all "basic" - same for Chad. They are a collective - and each does their own part - including Anton. I don't usually care for singing either - but the chilis have been my favorite band for about 15 years or so, so I most likely am quite biased.

agreed. most bass players forums i go to they are so anti-guitarist.
i think the problem of under estimating the importance of other instruments happens just as much on both sides. its just there are more guitarists, so it seems to happen more to us.

well thats my rant. hate me if you want.

but back on to the topic.
i love john frusciante's guitar work, more so than i like flea. but thats just me.
