I agree wholeheartedly. My slant Fury out-tones my Bongo. If I get compliments on my sound it's almost always playing my Fury.

Love the discussion on the Slant Fury! I only have the regular Fury and while I love it, have been eyeing either the Slant Fury or a Patriot for long while now.
For those who have (or used to have) both a Patriot and a Slant Fury, what is the better sounding of the two and how are they different, or are they very close in sound? Also, the neck profiles are typically different between both, correct? Bottom line, if could have only one as your main bass, either the Patriot or Slant Fury, which would it be?

I have both. The Patriot is a great bass as well. Somehow slightly more polite than the Fury. But similar in sound. I think its a little more higher register sounding. It's basically like putting a hot Jazz pickup in the sweet spot if that makes sense.
I have an ash body Slant Fury and a mahogany body Patriot. I think the Slant Fury is a better sound because it sonically fits anywhere a Precision does.
The pickup is located in the Precision location, it doesn't sound just like a split P pickup though, it seems like it has a bit of the original single coil 51 Precision sound but somehow better.
The Patriot pickup is the same size as the Foundation pickups (smaller than the Slant Fury pup) and is located sort of where a Musicman pickup sits, so the sound is more high register and doesn't deliver the bottom that a Musicman (big Humbucker and active electrics) will and has less bottom than the Precision and the Slant Fury.
What I like about the Patriot and the Foundation is their "rude, edge-y" sound, but I think they both need a little EQ to add more bottom.
I think the Slant Fury/T20 serves well as a main or only bass, the Patriot not as much.
I tend to think the Split P Precision is the easiest must have bass because that is the sound that has ended up on the most popular recordings for so damn long that's it's just a no brainer.
But a 51P and a Slant Fury would both do the job just as well and I think the Slant Fury is a hybrid between the 51P and the Split P.
The Slant Fury also doesn't have the noise of the single coil 51P pickup and the single coil Jazz pickups.
Not sure how Peavey got it to be so noiseless without going to split/humbucker design.
For me, Peavey's are all about their great unique pickup designs and their excellent necks.

The Super Ferrite is a monster pickup, easily my favorite. The slant Fury/T20 version has more beef and does start to creep up on the split coil P thing for having more ooomph.
The Patriot has that punchy Ric bridge thing, but not as deep of a fundamental due to the pickup being nudged towards the bridge. Typically, a touch of bass boost brings it into P bass/Jazz neck territory for supporting a band or mix.
My Patriot has an added neck Super Ferrite, so it can get that deep, Ric neck fundamental as well as the cool, scoopy blend tones.
In the grand scheme of unmodified basses: I'd most likely take a slant Fury/T20 over a Patriot.
However, I'd take my modified Patriot over those slant SF basses, without question.

Thanks! Seems like another vote for the slant Fury. Certainly harder to come by in the used market it seems, at least ones that are in great shape and not overpriced.
I love the sound of the pickup on my T-20, and it also comes with one of the coolest/most useful non-signal path features ever - that thumb rest built into the pickup ring! Simple, functional, innovative - makes no sense to me why that didn't catch on.
I have avoided touching my '87 mahogany Patriot for any mods because it's in immaculate condition, but whenever you bring up your modded Patriot I want to go find another Patriot that I could make like yours.
Peavey should have made that model as well, I think they would have sold a lot of them.
I agree. The 'Patriot Plus' would have been a known Ric killer! Heck, the stock, inexpensive Patriot bridge is still nicer and more adjustable than a stock Ric bridge!
Rickenbacker basses have made some great recordings but they are just too weird in several ways.
Haha, that's what I named mine. Patriot Plus would be my Peavey name for it.

Another cool thing about the Patriot is that the body is smaller so the bass feels compact and light, it makes the Fender Precision seem/feel tubby.
I have no problem showing off RicRiot! It's current (and final) revision has a Hipshot Xtender on the E and a wide-nut '85 neck on the 87 body. Thought about a bridge upgrade, but this one is just fine. Perhaps sometime in the future it will get a new pickguard, something flashy, like green sparkle or the like...
