Yeah, that bass was too heavy and wild for me at the time. I even put tapes on it to tame the sound a bit!
I would love to, but after dealing with trying to Frankenstein something for Mike B and having it be way more than I anticipated.. I'll probably have to pass. I did send one of Mike's preamps home with that OPA2145 to try out. I didn't hear back, hope he liked it.
Hey all! I had a Dyna-Bass back in the mid 80s in high school. Fast forward to now, I have only been playing custom boutique basses for the last 28 years. I went the full time player and educator route, so it has afforded me the means to be blessed with some truly world class basses. All of the 4k and up lumber, so getting back to one of my first basses will be a neat trip down memory lane! I am hoping to mod this a bit and make it a fun bar band bass.
I just bought a Dyna-Bass in almost new condition with the plastic funky black molded teardrop case, and the lining/fuzzy material looks new. 8.4 pounds! I got the bass for 375 on FB Marketplace from a guy with stellar ratings for musical gear he has sold. I am driving to pick it up tomorrow. My questions are, because it has been forever since I played one:
Does it have a 1.5 (jazz) nut width?
Those oversized routes for the super ferrite pickups....are they BC sized or much larger?
Are there any standard soap bar pickup shapes that fit the route in the plastic pickup rings or the cavity without the plastic rings?
Hoping to drop in some Nordstrand dual coils and a Trickfish preamp.
Here's a big one...I HATE sticky necks almost as much as I hate a painted sticky neck. Has anyone sanded back the color on the back of the painted necks to see what quality of maple they used in the necks under the paint and how many pieces? I'd love to take the back of the neck back to bare wood, then tung oil. (I own a custom snare drum building business, so yes, I know what I'm doing with wood and finish work.)

Hard to beat Nordstrand dual coils and a Trickfish preamp. If I decide to take the ferrite pickups out, I will pm you first!

It’s your bass.
But I strongly - and I do mean strongly - recommend you run the Super Ferrites through the Trickfish and give it an honest evaluation.
I certainly will. I'm not in a hurry to rip anything apart. If something REALLY works, then roll with it, I say!
To me, after evaluating it a bunch, cleaning the board, leveling and crowning the frets, it would be ideal to leave the pickups. For me, putting in the Trickfish pre would most certainly be the first place to start.
Beyond that, I am hoping there is enough clear finish on the back of the neck to get to 3000 grit then 0000 steel wool to get it slippery, while NOT removing paint. I just need it in tip top playing and sounding shape.
I am sure to follow up once I pick it up tomorrow. Finding a USA made bass for under 400 bucks WITH a case (plus, it's that super-hip Peavey case!) is about is good of a bargain as can be found in this economy. Hoping this bass happily resides in rotation!
They briefly had two options. 1" 11/16ths or 1.5"

I got it on Saturday. Definitely a J nut width. It is clean but has a few issues. Preamp and output jack are toast. Truss nut is bottoming out, so it needs a few washers under the nut to grab some thread. Bridge was initially not mounted dead center, so the rollers are not able to be adjusted to allow the strings to be on center. All no big deal, just things to sort out. Acoustically, it sounds GREAT, and passive it is a great bass! The bones are there!
Bonus...the Countour Case AND the padded interior are REALLY clean!

It’s unlikely that the bridge position is wrong. It’s more likely that the neck needs aligning, like on so many other bolt-on basses. Yeah, that was my first inclination that I tried first. However, it does need a small scootch to the left. This has to be at least my 150th bass (not a stretch over 45 years). This is a simple drill-plug-recenter-drill. But for a bass from 1987, if all it needs is a fresh preamp.updated tuners, a setup and a few washers, I am OK with that!

Personally I loathe those cases and the loathing got worse with each one.Bonus...the Countour Case AND the padded interior are REALLY clean!
With a Peavey bass collection numbering 68, thankfully they stopped using them or that loathing was in danger of reaching record breaking levels
I just came back from my luthier, Ray Simonetti, and the bridge was REALLY not centered, or mounted straight. Bridge centered, problem fixed!
Washers under the truss rod nut gave us plenty of thread to work with. The wood just got compressed over time. Neck adjusts freely now. Neck is dead straight with zero buzzes!
Next is to tackle the crackling preamp. We confirmed its toast, so to Trickfish I go! When I'm done, this will be a seriously great bass!
I actually dig the chainsaw case, and ai loathe hard cases. Super retro, is light, and does its job.

I had a really nice passive Forum P/J but gave it to a friend in need. I wanted another but they are quite rare and were only made for two years. I found one at a Music Go Round store out of state and bought it. It arrived today and is in really nice condition considering its age. Almost no fret wear and just the typical scuffs on the back. Set up was not too good as it had more forward bow than I like so I removed the truss rod cover and found that lovely Gibson style truss rod nut would not turn either way. So I thought about it for a while and then remembered I had the same thing on another Peavey and used my soldering iron to heat the truss rod nut and it came free. So I tried that on this bass and it worked. I unscrewed the nut almost off and then put a bit if grease on the threads in the nut. I adjusted the truss rod and got the neck almost dead straight....just the way I like it.
Then I discovered some notes on the D and A strings choked out up past the 12th fret. OH NO.....NOT THE DREADED SKI JUMP!! I looked down the neck from the headstock and it looks okay. The D and A string saddles were simply too low. I raised them a bit and now it plays cleanly up the neck. Whew!
This one is gloss black with a white pickguard. I have a set of TI flats on the way and will do a through clean and polish when I replace the strings.

Also the necks on these basses are quite nice although I would prefer them to be wider at the nut. This one is Jazz bass width....1.5". The neck is clean with now dents to the neck. I like the bass a lot and will not give this one away.

I made one a few weeks ago. I had an effed-up B/W/B pickguard and just traced the outline of my old broken cover and then took a vibro saw to cut the piece out, then a little sanding to get it just right. Drilled the mounting hole and used a blow dryer to bend it to shape.
Only took about twenty minutes.
